New DVD set from MPI to include American Scene Magazine sketches, more rarirites

Jackie Gleason was “must-see TV” ages before anyone coined the phrase. In 1952, “The Great One” began hosting his own weekly CBS variety series, which included a fanciful array of characters of his own creation: aristocratic snob Reginald Van Gleason III, child-like Fenwick Babbitt, cocktail-loving Rum Dum, wise-cracking Joe the Bartender, the befuddled Poor Soul, loudmouth Charlie Bratton and, most famously, bombastic bus driver Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners sketches. This special 70th anniversary commemoration of The Jackie Gleason Show brings together all of the legend’s favorite characters in hours of rare material spanning the 1950s and 1960s when Gleason was a top ten hit on Saturday nights for millions of viewers. The subsequent 1966-1970 run of The Jackie Gleason Show is represented with seven more Honeymooners rarities and other surprises in color. I doubt it, but the full list of sketches doesn't seem to be out so who knows. It does mention "surprises in color," but that could be non-Honeymooners sketches. It definitely has "The Big Sell," "Two Below," and "TV Game of the Week," and it seems to have the seven color sketches that were on that Time-Life DVD set a few years ago.

It will be an interesting collection. If the Gleason/Carney sketch is from the “Big Sell” special, it’s one of the few that takes place completely outside of the apartment set. It’s them having lunch together in a park. It’s also fairly brief. The Reggie sketch with Phil Harris from that same show is very funny, but he’s not listed as a guest, so it’s doubtful it will be included. If they include the 2 Honeymooner sketches from American Scene that will be nice to finally see all of them. (The bomb shelter one is already out). Carney did do a walk on spot during Gleason’s monologue in another show, not in character as Ed Norton (though Gleason has him do a quick bit as Norton bowling). It will nice to see hopefully better quality ASM shows. The 4 they are airing on Tubi are very decent quality. Would be fantastic if they include any material from the short lived 30 minute Gleason variety show from 58-59 with Buddy Hackett. It was on this show he debuted Rum Dum.

According to this site, it is a total of 7 hours, so don't expect a full run of anything. Probably a handful of previously unreleased shows. I guess MPI finally realized they could no longer get away with repackaging previously released material and selling it as "new". So, "Genius at Work", included in this set, means they are down to 6 hours of possible new material.
