I thought the family was overreacting by not wanting Betty to spend part of her spring break seeing what working at the engineering site would be like.
If it was understood that Betty was going to college, why would it matter for her to do something in high school? I was disappointed in Betty going home early from her first day. I would have been okay with it if she had gone home end of the day and then talked to her family about what had happened and how ole Doyle Hobbs talked to her. I am not sure if I dig how she goes out with plumb bob at the end. Thoughts? |

I agree, the family went overboard in their objections, particularly Margaret--calling it a road gang.
I think Betty should have pursued civil engineering in spite of Doyle. I can't remember what she did--did she drop-kick Doyle and then go out with Bob (whom we'd never seen before, IIRC)? |

Like I keep saying. The one that oppresses you the most is the person in the mirror.
"In 1876, Elizabeth Bragg became the first woman to receive a bachelor's degree in engineering. She earned her degree in civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley according to the university's website, but Bragg never worked as a professional engineer. She was a stay-at-home wife and mother." https://alltogether.swe.org/2019/03/...ering-history/ |

I wonder if she had an issue with the way Doyle talked to her or if it gave her tingles. She could have had both engineering and Doyle, I think. |

I do remember the episode with Barbara Eden--Betty went ga-ga over Doyle in that episode. She wanted to accept a date with him but had a tentative date with Ralph. Jim butted in, figuring a 20+ year old couldn't handle her own affairs.
I don't think they went out in that episode, not that she didn't want to. It probably would have worked out had she been permitted to be an adult. |

They made her stay home rather than live in the dorms. I can see why they made that decision as it would only be Bud and Kitten at home and that was not enough for the show. The Waltons is another one where kids live at home and are not really treated like adults. Jim Bob comes back from war/camp and people who had not even been in the service were telling him what to do. Want to be an adult, move out... |

In the homing pigeon episode she did briefly move into an apartment with her friend. She got cold feet and moved back home.
