I have thought about that for a few people driving their cars.
How does one "give someone the business"? |

Back in the 1960s, we usually used the term in the same context as "runaround". Sort of a mental "wild goose chase" sort of thing...anything besides what you really want....

I'd say it could also be described as "breaking someone's b*lls".

My aunts nephew (her side of the family) worked for a company and became friends with the owner ... and when the owner died the owner GAVE HIM THE BUSINESS for free worth about $20 mil !
Maybe if someone gives you the business ... it may be a good thing LOL |

Just today I experienced someone giving me "the business" in the sense I have historically interpreted ir.
Stopped by Subway for breakfast, and they were all out of whole egg, and tried to persuade me to accept egg white as a substitute. I hate egg white, and I was completely unwilling to accept the substitute. So the gal launched a narrative about how much more healthful just whites were, and how she felt they were a superior alternative, preferred them herself... She, IMO, was giving me "the business".....she may still be going for all I know, I lost track when I walked out the door. |

This is probably closest to truth, although, with some of the drivers on the road, I would not mind a way to give them the business.

It's easier to give someone the business when you're teenage or really old because you can pass it off as innocence or forgetfulness.
