Default Explosion in Flint, Michigan

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/...xplosion-fire/

Monday night we were watching tv and at around 9:30 there was an enormous boom. The house shook and the windows rattled. All of our neighbors ran outside wondering what the **** was that!? I got on the computer right away and saw that a house on the west side of Flint had exploded. That was about 10 miles away from us but it sounded much closer. It was so weird! The explosion was felt in areas up to 20 miles away.

No gas leaks suspected so I am wondering maybe a Meth Lab? The area is in a low rent district . Nothing has been suggested about a Meth Lab. Just my suspicion. A child was killed in the home and a neighbor. You can see the devastation in the article. No cause has been determined yet.

Glad you were not closer to the mayhem. It's always a little bit frightening when "unknown causes" things start happening.

When I was about 9 yrs old, two side-by-side houses exploded about 8 blocks from where I was in school. And while gas was suspected, no one understood "why" gas was a common element.

But they decided they didn't want all the kids inside the building, just in case. So they sent us all out on the playground, for 3 hours. Students whos parents came to get them were allowed to leave, the rest of us were stranded until the school day was over.

Ultimately what they found was, when gas lines are put into houses, it's not uncommon for voids in the soil around the pipe to form as soil settles, and water from subsequent rains leeches down into the soil, making the voids bigger.

So, they figered that an over weight truck passed by on the street, causing a crack in a weld on a 10" gas main that was buried 8' below the pavement, and the freed gas under considerable pressure followed the voids around the smaller pipes entering the two houses and accumulating in their basements....until.... BLAMMO!

It's creepy thinking about dangers such as that being right on your own property, where you have no way of even knowing they are there

My nephew who is a Flint police officer was the first responder to the scene. He thinks it was a gas leak but the power company is not admitting anything yet. He says that a Meth lab would not have been so devastating. It was like a bomb was dropped.three houses destroyed and windows blown out all over the area.

Terrible Penny, and it most likely was a gas company issue. There has been an ongoing gas leak disaster in Los Angeles for some yrs. Many homes and I believe lives lost and ongoing legal actions against gas company..

https://www.nytimes.com/1979/03/20/a...-6-people.html

A major gas explosion happened about 12:30AM in March 1979 in New Jersey and I remember lying in bed and hearing the windows rattle for 5 - 10 seconds, 20+ miles away in NYC.
