Default Tournament Round One: Leave it to Beaver vs. Bachelor Father

Leave it to Beaver is one of the most popular sitcom boards here. It aired 6 seasons split between ABC and CBS from 1957-1963. Starring Jerry Mathers as Theodore Cleaver, who everyone calls Beaver. Tony Dow was his older brother Wally. Hugh Beaumont and Barbara Billingsley were their parents Ward and June. Some have thought June cleaning the house in high heels was not realistic. But my grandma did the same thing. Ken Osmond was Wally's slimy best friend Eddie Haskell, with Frank Bank as Clarence "Lumpy" Rutherford. Lumpy's father Fred was played by Richard Deacon, who went on to The Dick Van Dyke Show. Rusty Stevens was Beaver's best friend Larry Mondello. Show was not the same after Larry left. The most memorable of Beaver's teachers was Miss Landers (Sue Randall).

Bachelor Father is a rare sitcom that aired on all three major broadcast networks that were around then: CBS, ABC, and NBC. It aired five seasons split among them from 1957-1962. Long before Dynasty, John Forsythe starred as lawyer Bentley Gregg. He became the guardian to his 13 year old niece Kelly Gregg (Noreen Corcoran) after her parents died. Sammee Tong was their houseboy Peter Tong. Bernadette Withers was Kelly's best friend Ginger, and the family dog was Jasper. Bachelor Father is a charming show, a shame it has not had the success of Leave it to Beaver in syndication.

Bachelor Father is under-played and was a funny show. But Beaver still gets my vote.

One interesting thing about Bachelor Father was the brilliant casting of Sammee Tong. The stars of the show many times played straight man/woman to his jokes.

In the biggest margin of victory yet, Leave it to Beaver destroys Bachelor Father 13-1 and will advance to the 2nd round. Poor John Forsythe never stood a chance when Eddie Haskell ordered a hit on him.
