In fourth grade, we used those little looms to make a potholder. Then in sixth grade, we had to sew a pillowcase (mine came out terrible because I had no patience for it).
I have managed to sew a few buttons back on my shirt if they popped off, but that's about all I dare to attempt. |

My Mom sewed really well, she made a lot of our clothes !
My Sister and I had no interest at the time in sewing ! I took sewing along with cooking ( home economics) in high school but only for an elective, for credits ! I made a patchwork pillow and even a teddy bear that turned out not looking much like a teddy bear and a dress that REALLY, pathetically looked home made ! ![]() Now , I really wished I had stuck with it and really learned and could sew well, like my Mom and my Aunts and Grandmas ! My Sis and I and my cousins, none of us could be bothered , but I do regret it now ! ![]() Why do you regret not being able to sew, Opus?

I'm able to sew, learned at an early age, sew on buttons, shorten trousers, re-close an opened seam. Simple stuff. Occasionally even sew on a splice patch to mend a tear.
People often pretend to be shocked that a man is willing to admit he knows how to sew. They'll see me and exclaim "Oh? you like to sew?" And I'll respond "no, there is no one who LIKES to sew, but I CAN sew, when necessary." I suspect they were going to try and volunteer a repair item for my "enjoyment". F-that! |

I can sew a little bit. I took it in home ec. I wasn't very good or bad. But it wasn't my favorite thing to do. I did have a sewing machine that I used, but it was stolen in a burglary. I do wish I could sew, I mean really sew.

Well IDK if Valerie could even teach you , remember in Woman of the house when Mark thanked Barbara for sewing the buttons on his dental jacket and she said " I didn't do it, I guess Grandma did" ? So Grandma can teach you to sew !
![]() But maybe Valerie really does sew? She's very good with the cooking and baking , maybe sewing too? ![]()

Here, I spent hours drawing this (cross sectional view) up just for you, follow the arrows and you cant go wrong.
Black arrows are the general direction of individual stitches. Blue arrows are the down stitch through the piece you are sewing Green arrows are the return stitch back up through the fabric before beginning the next stitch The yellow and violet crosshatched lines are end views of two pieces of fabric being joined together The red line is the thread Notice that the back stitch is one half the length of the forward stitch, and the forward stitch should generally be no longer than 10 threads in the fabric you are sewing. Patience is the key, don't cheat and try to take long spaces between stitches, uniform spacing is crucial.

Sewing is a nice skill to have when you want to hem a pair of pants or sew on a button. My grandmother taught me to sew when I was around 9 or 10. I would make outfits for my Barbie dolls. Then later I would make smock tops for myself which was a big thing in the 70's. They turned out pretty good, I wore them to school. I also did embroidery on my jeans, mainly stars & hearts, they were easy to do.
