The first main meal of the day is breakfast.
The second main meal is lunch. Why does the third have two names? |

It is supper. If you call it dinner, people may think you're talking about lunch.

I always call it dinner now, but as a kid we called it both dinner and supper ! I think it depended on what the meal was or something ? If my Mom went all out and made something really elegant or trying a new fancy recipe and on Sunday it was dinner , (that was always a big nice meal )
Oh and also if company was over it was dinner ! But just the regular every night meal was supper? Or something like that ! ![]() But IDK how over the years I always call it dinner now ? even if I am serving slop or just leftovers !!!

You forgot to mention brunch. And according to Jerry Seinfeld's short lived fiancé, Jeanie, a combo of lunch and dinner/supper is either called "linner" or "lupper." Probably served at around 3:30 pm.

And while I was making the thread I did actually think of Seinfeld. “Hey! So what's the deal with brunch? I mean that if it's a combination of breakfast and lunch, how comes there's no ‘lupper’. Or no ‘linner’?” — Jeannie Steinman, Seinfeld, Season 7: The Invitations |

Many southerners call it supper. Growing up in the south everyone I knew called it supper. I call it dinner if we're going out to a nice restaurant at night.

My grandparents called that a davenport. Apparently, in parts of Canada, it's called a chesterfield. I think there's a Family Guy joke about old-timey names for couches.

Generally, I eat either dinner on the couch, or supper on the sofa, but often resort to snacks on the davenport, to hold me over.
