Default Tournament Round One: Murphy Brown (1988) vs. DAG

Murphy Brown was an Emmy favorite, the original run airing 10 seasons from 1988-1998 on CBS. This was a workplace comedy set at FYI, a weekly hourlong newscast in Washington, D.C. Candice Bergen starred as the abrasive and very pushy Murphy Brown. Charles Kimbrough played Jim Dial and Joe Regalbuto played Frank Fontana. FYI had been a three person team until Murphy had to take a leave of absence to enter the Betty Ford clinic for her alcoholism. The new executive producer Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud) made it a team of four when Murphy came back. Her replacement Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford) was made permanent. Murphy's house painter Eldin Bernecky (Robert Pastorelli) took a record amount of years to finish his job. Then he stayed around to be nanny to Murphy's son Avery. Pat Corley was the bartender Phil. Grant Shaud left at the end of season 8. Replacing Miles as executive producer was Kay Carter-Shepley (Lily Tomlin), who had no news experience coming from a game show. In later seasons Garry Marshall, creator of the Happy Days franchise, recurred as nutty network president Stan Lansing. His even crazier nephew Andrew was played by Paul Reubens, aka Pee Wee Herman. Christopher Rich recurred as clueless newscaster Miller Redfield.

DAG is the best one season sitcom of all time, from 2000-2001 on NBC. It sadly aired a few years before short lived shows would start getting put on DVD. Who knows if I will ever get to see this brilliant show again. Starring David Alan Grier as Secret Service Agent Jerome Daggett who messed up and got demoted to the First Lady Judith Whitman (Delta Burke). Lea Moreno was first daughter Camilla Whitman. Lauren Tom was the first lady's secretary Ginger Chin.

Now this match is a dead heat with 16 hours of voting left.

I bet this is what convinces the voters that Murphy Brown deserves to be beaten by a short-runner. Bad matchup? Because not enough people are voting in it. I wish MB would just advance to the second round already. A DAG win here would prove why CatsRule reducing the voting period to just five days is a mistake.

"Stay Safe"? More like "Stay Sad".

I'm honestly surprised DAG is doing so well. I didn't thing anybody remembered that show (well, except for the Catsrule/icecream). I voted for it because when it aired, I had recorded all the episodes and really enjoyed that show. I never did get into Murphy Brown, however.

DAG defeats Murphy Brown 7-6 and will advance to the 2nd round. I wonder if some of the DAG votes are more votes against Murphy Brown. Between the politics and the main character being really mean and pushy, that could turn off some to Murphy Brown.

It's the upset that I feared was coming. Is Murphy Brown really THAT bad a show? I hate when long-running series-es are withheld from syndication because of their datedness alone, though the reason is actually more of a lack of music-rights clearances. I really hope this DAG show gets curbstomped in the 2nd round and doesn't advance any further. Only way for Murphy Brown to have won is if you kept the voting for this matchup open for just one more day. I swear, you're gonna regret pairing these two up for the rest of your life.
