Thumbs up Odor Eaters commercial

Roy did a TV commercial that had Tomorrow Show host Tom Snyder convulsed: I think the product was Odor Eaters --some sort of shoe insert, that prevented foot odor. Roy was sitting in a chair, taking off his shoes, and his dog --who was holding Roy's slippers in his mouth --"fainted" at the odor. Close-Up of Roy looking at the camera.

First seen in late 1973-1974, the ad lasted for a few years after.
Sad that he passed away

When I read his complete obituary in variety I was saddened and shocked. I was saddened to read of his passing, but when i found out that he was gayI was shockedl He was survived by his life partner cause just by watching his acting over the yrs especially on Gomer Pyle USMC he acted tough and very straight well we thought Jim Nabors was straight too goes to show you cant judge a book by its cover

That's a shock to me also to find out Roy Stuart was gay. Watching him perform in Gomer Pyle, you would never know. It's the same thing with Robert Reed from Brady Bunch, he was gay too. I also wonder why Roy Stuart left Gomer Pyle, he had a good rapport with Frank Sutton and Roy was missed in the last season when they replaced him with Ronnie Schell as the corporal. Ronnie didn't really fit well in the role of the corporal, he acted the same like he was still one of the privates in the platoon.

TV Were Roy and Barbara Stuart related?

A cheer for Roy Stuart. Was he brother to Barbara Stuart, Sgt. Carter's girlfriend, Bunny?

Roy Stuart was gay? Just goes to show you, "never judge a book by its cover". Robert Reed, Hayden Rourke, Raymond Burr, Dick Seargent, Richard Chamberlain, George Takei...the list goes on and on.

And I never knew that Jim Nabors is too!!!

I read somewhere that he left GP because he signed a contract with someone to do movies, unfortunately, that someone died and the movies were never made.

The last response prior to your post was 12-29-2008! I think Jim was pretty loyal to his friends, Ronnie originally left the series to costar in Good Morning World, when that series failed Jim brought him back. Stuart was a supporting actor, a real journeyman, I doubt anyone would have give him a contract to do movies.

I recently mentioned Roy Stuart's movie contract in another thread in this forum, so I'm probably the source of Sarah reading that. (I'm wrong, I didn't post about that here.) At first I couldn't remember where I'd read that about Stuart, but a quick Google search turned up the book, and I happened to have it handy. It's called "Written Out of Television" by Steven Lance, and it's a good book. Jack Larson was also interviewed about the show. The book covers shows from 1945 to 1994.

Roy did "The Love God?" starring Don Knotts in 1969 for director Nat Hiken and Hiken signed Stuart for a five picture deal at Universal. But then Hiken died and the deal died too. I know it sounds strange -- it did to me too --for a journeyman like Stuart to be signed to a movie contract, but if you look at Hiken's TV shows, he used many supporting and even bit players over and over again. That's just the way he worked. and they surely didn't get paid much.

Lance quoted an interview he did with Roy Stuart, and Roy said he asked out of the show because of the movie contract. While Ronnie Schell said in the recent "Gomer Says Hey!" book that he felt bad about the way Roy left, but Roy was a good guy and didn't hold it against him. So it was probably a combo of both, and didn't work out very well for Roy. Although Roy did well with commercials. In the Lance book Roy said he loved being recognized from the show. Also that he and Frank Sutton clicked from their first episode and he didn't know at the time that Frank was given final say in who they hired long term for the role.

Here's a link to a couple short articles Mark Evanier, who writes a very good blog, wrote about Roy. https://www.newsfromme.com/?s=roy+stuart

Samme, thanks for the clarification on Roy's movie deal.

"The Love God?" was a character actor's all star team, look at just some of the names:

Bob Hastings
James Westerfield
Herb Voland
Jacques Aubuchon
Willis Bouchey
Ruth McDevitt

Wow, what a great line-up.

I assume Jim Nabors knew Roy was gay. Also, Jack Larson, who appeared in one episode of Gomer Pyle just before Roy joined the cast, was also gay. Strange coincidence or not?

If you watched a lot of TV from the '60's all those names would be very familiar. If you're an 80s and 90s TV person I can see how you don't know them. Likewise I don't know anybody of the 80s and 90s TV shows.

My favorite TV years are the '50s thru early '70s beyond that and all the Bob Newhart and Dabney Coleman various TV shows from the 80s & 90s those 2 are the exceptions I'm lost.
