Wow, hard to pick one. Here are a few I like:
The episode where Carter goes home for the weekend to get away from Gomer, except Gomer accidentally goes with him. The episode where Gomer drives Carter to the airport in Carter's car which gets stolen and eventually destroyed by a wrecking ball. The episode where Gomer lost the wedding ring he was holding for Purcell, apparently in one of the loaves of bread he was baking for Sgt Hacker. |

The one where Carter has a bet with Hacker as to whether Carter holds his temper.

Jim Nabors was a great guy and the cast of the show was excellent but the set up of the series was silly and very unrealistic. Lots of suspension of disbelief (like Puke going through Basic in the same camp where he stayed his entire enlistment, plus only being an E-1 for five years….
Saying that, an episode I liked was a first season black and white where the platoon paired off and sent off to the woods to survive with no rations and minimum gear. Carter as usual saw Gomer as a screw up and so Carter paired off with Gomer to keep watch over him. Actually Gomer being a country boy and living in that environment knew a lot more thanCarter about animals (they ran across a skunk which freaked Carter out but Gomer picked the animal up and said it was harmless unless it was spooked. Gomer was also proficient in hunting, trapping and fishing. Carter was from a big city (just by his accent) and knew far less than Gomer about the wild. Carter was even digging a deep hole to get thimbles of water while Gomer just followed a stream to a river and “McGyvered” a batch of freshly caught fish. Carter was worthless in this element. Came back to camp after a few days for a weigh in, which was the point of the exercise, to see how much weight the men would lose being out in the elements with nothing. Carter and Gomer gained weight, and was accused by the officer in charge of smuggling rations and cheating on the test. It was a first season episode, don’t know the name but the Hank Williams song “Country Folks can Survive” seemed appropriate enough. |
