I've heard that I DREAM OF JEANNIE often had problems with the censors, is this true?
After all, a man is living in sin with a female genie!

The only part I know of for sure stems from Barbara Eden joking about her navel and then the censors getting nervous about that for some reason. After that, her navel was not allowed to be seen on the show, yet no other women had to hide theirs.

They did require her harem pantaloons to be lined, though that didn't happen right away. Plus, the skirt of the green outfit doesn't appear to be lined, especially when her sister tosses it up when she walks or twirls. Her legs show rather nicely in those instances

Some other things other than what has been mentioned:

* Jeannie had to be seen coming OUT of Tony's bedroom, not just going in. They were not happy about the smoke going under the bedroom door and not seeing it come back out again, for instance.

* The whole thing with the belly button started because of a challenge from Laugh-In. The producers of Laugh In thought they could air Barbara in her Jeannie costume with her navel showing, but the censors vetoed that.

* There are a couple of places where Barbara's navel slips out. Watching for it to happen is rather fun.

I saw an interview with Barbara once where she was saying she thinks that whole thing about not being allowed to show her belly button is ridiculous because in the Hawaii episodes they showed women in bikinis and they showed their belly buttons and no one complained.

It amazes me that they were obsessed with her navel yet there were some episodes where she showed mounds of cleavage. Coincidentally those were my favorites.

I guess b/c the other girls in bikinis were not regulars on the show and Jeannie's costume was constant, so maybe they felt having her belly button shown in every episode as part of her regular look would have been too much.

In honor of Barbara's 90th (!) birthday, here are a few pictures from episodes #70 and #72 (by broadcast order) showing her seldom-seen Navel Reserve!
