Yellow lines..? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Ok. So my kid and I were watching episodes from season 5/6 on dvd
and I noticed all these faint yellow lines/bars on screen. Maybe like 3. I tried them on a different tv and the same thing. I thought the dvd's were going bad but I thought it was odd that they were all doing the same thing.

Now I'm watching it on regular tv on Logo and I'm seeing it. (Furley's niece episode / Roper's return etc..) This doesn't happen with any other channel/show. Was this the way it was filmed? Anyone noticed this? I can't believe I never saw it before. So annoying once you notice it.

Are they in the middle of the screen or to the left and right sides?

Here might be an explanation: watching old TV shows on modern HDTV's will expose what's called the over scan of all four sides of the image on screen.

This was never apparent with old square CRTV's as the image was more cropped to fit the rectangular oval shape.

In short you're basically seeing more of the picture frame that in the past was safely masked off on old TV's, hope that helps.

I never noticed but I will be on the look out the next time those eps appear on pluto tv

Im watching the Ropers return episode and I dont see any yellow lines so maybe its a DVD thing and they used the Logo versions

And I am even watching the episode on my computer and the picture is clear and has no yellow lines

Color banding is a normal problem when transferring old, quad video tapes. When present, it may be more or less evident depending upon the color saturation of your particular viewing gear, as well as your natural perception of color. As an over-simplified explanation for the effect, it happens when the quad tape isn't perfectly aligned with the head. The horizontal bands may appear yellow, blue, orange, red or green, and do turn up in other episodes in the dvd set. Look for them against bright, solid backgrounds and as distorted skin tones in facial close ups.

Some of the TC shows were recorded using a different tape method when they changed studios and, as a result, have a much different picture quality.

Back in the 70's, when stations would broadcast from quad tapes, you would often see these bands much more prominently when the tape machines lost sync, or the servo needed adjusting-- I remember Sanford and Son reruns and such that would be all orange and green lines (one or two of eps of that show on dvd has faint banding, as well).

Nature of the beast when dealing with old, finicky tape formats.

Sounds like a DVD issue

It is permanent on the dvd. Like the missing tag scene.

I still wonder if that rare Italian dvd, Tre Cuori in Affitto, has the tag scene, since the episodes also include an English soundtrack..

Yeah but that was from cable or satellite-- I'm wondering if the Italian dvd release might have the English soundtrack. Since the tag scene made it to broadcast, maybe it is intact on the dvd even if the English track is corrupted. Can't see dropping $120 to find out though.

I would pay $520 for a ABC crisp clear copy with commercials and the tag scene that aired on 12/4/79
