I'm sorry, but this just happened to my family this week, and I have to get it off my chest so to speak.
Okay, so to start...my granny and I are close. We speak by phone daily and get together in person at least once a week. She had two children, my late mother who was an absolute joy in our family and my uncle who...well, let's just say he went in a different direction. He has been a dedicated junkie/alcoholic most of his life and in and out of jail for numerous drug and "white collar" crimes. About 15 years ago, my uncle was in one of his clean and sober moments and convinced my granny that he was truly attempting to better himself. Wanting to support him in his endeavors, she took him in. Unfortunately after he moved into her home, his sobriety quickly came to an end and it wasn't long before he was back on the booze and meth. His behavior became increasingly erratic over the years and he has continued to escalate to a now violent level. On Tuesday, at approximately 3 a.m., I received a frantic call from Granny asking for help. My uncle, under the influence of copious amounts of alcohol and meth, barged into my granny's bedroom and physically assaulted her. I immediately called 911 and raced over to her house. At first, I was relieved to see that the police were already there. My relief quickly vanished when the officer informed me that because my uncle denied any wrong doing and my granny didn't have any "visible injuries" that they were refusing to arrest him. The officers strongly encouraged me to take her back to my home for the rest of the night and ushered us out without so much as even offering my 83 year old grandmother any medical assistance. Instead of taking her to my house, I drove her to the closest hospital to have her evaluated. After an examination, we learned that my uncle broke her hand in three places and left multiple bruises to her face/chest area. The hospital was kind enough to report this new information to the police, but we still have not received any response from them. My granny has now returned to her home, her abuser still in residence with her, and we're working with social services on getting her a restraining order. We've been informed however, that while she might be granted a restraining order, because her son is on the title of the home with her, LE may refuse to enforce such an order. At this point, I am equal parts angry, discouraged, and scared for her safety. I am hoping for some input and possible advice. Have any of y'all been through something similar? Are there any legal experts on the board who can offer advice? If nothing else, thank you for listening and letting me vent as it were. |
