Blanche, George, Kids, the House

Hey, like most of you I'm an avid GG watcher been watching since its Lifetime-exclusive era. I see we have a lot of threads around the inconsistencies. Here's one I just can't shake, and it can't be blamed on change of writers because correct if I'm wrong S1-3 was the same writing team.

1) From the beginning I was always led to believe that George left Blanche a very wealthy woman in his passing. The character of George when ever we got see him was always wearing business suits, which led me to believe George was some sort of self-made executive of a very well established corporation.

In S1 when Rose lost her job at the counseling center, there was a line where they're at the kitchen table and Blanche says to Rose "Thank God I sense to marry money" then Dorothy slaps and says "Tramp".... So ok, Blanche was left a wealthy woman, made since by the way she carried herself and the house.

FF to S3 - The Episode where they try auction for one of the Jasper Dekimbles paintings to pay for their new roof. It was made to believe Blanche barely had to 2 nickels to rub together, as they all had to scrounge what little "Savings" they had to just come up with 10K. While in the Kitchen discussing the matter Rose even points out "Dorothy we don't have 10K", Dorothy - "We can barely afford a patch job" ..... Now how is this is Blanche is supposed to have been left wealthy, if not wealthy, at least very comfortable in the finance dept.

I mean Blanche only work (Never understood why she worked if was set by a wealthy husband). I chalked this up to she needed something to do. I also chalked up the fact she had roommates to begin with was she was trying overcoming the Empty Nest with Kids all gone and George dying. She simply didn't want to be in that big house by herself.


2) The House, now I was always led to believe that the House was same house she and George raised (However many, keeps changing) kids in..... But in the episode with heavyset Rebecca. Rebecca says to Blanche "I love your house, Mama" .... I just caught this, as I always had thought she said "I love WHAT YOU DID TO, the house, Mama", meaning Blanche had remodeling done before taking in Dorothy Rose Sophia... Nope she definitely said "I love your house, Mama".... So obviously if this is NOT the house she and George raised their children in, then one would have to guess that she bought the current house after George's death with the wealth he left her.


This would made sense if it was one of the later seasons when the writing had changed and we were thrusted through different universes of the characters traits, but this was within period of the same writing team.

That's one thing I don't like about GG, the characters backgrounds are changing constantly to fit the plot. Its like every episode is simply plot driven, and really there is no arch or continuing story throughout the series. Except for Dorothy and Stan's marriage of 38 years, I think that maybe ONLY consistent character trait to any of the girls. Even Rose and Charlie goes through several different iterations. How many children, when they first met, Charlie's jobs.

Yeah, the bizarre lack of continuity with the family members always bugs me, too. It's even worse than on Friends: on Friends, the characters will have different birthdates, but at least their family members stay consistent all the way through the series.

I never noticed any inconsistencies on Friends.

As for the GG house and how Rebecca says: "I love your house, mama." There is a later episode where pea brain Rose alerts the permit guy to the fact that Blanche has four tenants and must evict someone. Dorothy wants Blanche to sell shares of the house to everyone so all of them can be owners. Blanche is upset and says something like: "This is the house where I raised my family..." Well, if that's true, then why would adult Rebecca say: "I love your house, mama" like she's just seeing it for the first time?

Ross stays 30 for three years, their birth months keep changing, and in the pilot Rachel and Chandler don't know each other, but in "flashbacks" shown in later seasons, they knew each other and went on double dates.

Also, a weird tidbit: in very early episodes, the closet in Monica's apartment (by the balcony) wasn't a closet, but a door that led outside. You can see sunlight streaming through the window at the top of the door. At least once, the door is partially open. That blew my mind, on a rewatch.

But they were better than GG about family continuity: once it's stated Rachel has two sisters, they stay her sisters. Same with other family relationships.

Yep. Maybe she didn't consider Rebecca family?
