Default Perfect Strangers Reboot in the Works at HBO Max

Quote:
It’s time to do the dance of joy.

Perfect Strangers, the late ’80s and early ’90s comedy that made Cousin Balki a pop culture phenomenon, is being revived at HBO Max

with Robin Thede and London Hughes set to star in a reboot of the former ABC series.

The multicamera comedy, which is currently in the development stages, revolves around perfect strangers Deja (Thede) and Poppy (Hughes) who unexpectedly discover that they are half-sisters when they both inherit a one-bedroom apartment above a trap yoga studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Polar opposites, they must learn how to live and work together.

Thede will write the script and exec produce the comedy alongside Robert L. Boyett, who served in the same capacity on the original show’s eight-season run. The new Perfect Strangers hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Thede and her For Better or Words banner is based with an overall deal.

Perfect Strangers was created by Dale McRaven and revolved around Midwesterner Larry (Mark Linn-Baker) and his distant cousin, Balki (Bronson Pinchot), who moves in with him after traveling from the small (and fictional) Mediterranean island of Mypos. The series ran for eight seasons and 150 episodes and anchored ABC’s original TGIF programming block. It was produced by Miller/Boyett Productions (Happy Days, Full House, Mork & Mindy) and Lorimar Television, the latter of which was eventually acquired by Warners Bros.

Reboots have become increasingly common in the peak TV era as streamers and networks alike look for titles with built-in awareness that help cut through the clutter while also adding value to the original series on streaming.

Perfect Strangers is the latest library title to be revived at Warner Bros. TV. The studio, now overseen by Channing Dungey, also has updates of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Head of the Class and Sex and the City in the works, all for its streaming counterpart HBO Max.

That sounds different enough in premise that it doesn't need to be called Perfect Strangers. But whatever, haha.

I read the release and it looks like they borrowed ideas from another show called "Sister Sister" which came out around the time Perfect Strangers (Balki and Larry Edition) ended.

Honestly I didn't think Perfect Strangers would be rebooted in the USA. I thought Korea and Philippines would run with their version of Perfect Strangers first before the USA would. There is a Korean Actress who would play the Balki card on Korean shows and play these roles in various comedy skits. It looked like Perfect Strangers was heading to Korea when I watched that clip.

I was watching this tv series called United States of Al and I had this strange feeling I've seen this somewhere else. A strange immigrant from another country getting used to the culture shock and traditions of the United States. Learning from his room mater best friend who each try to trust and grow from each other. I could almost feel the vest growing on that actor. Then I wanted to know if anyone else felt that way and the internet people responded that it was like a Perfect Strangers reboot. I will never ever lose the place in my heart that PS has taken in my life or that lovable Mypiot even if the actor at the time didn';t feel like the person he portrayed on TV which saddened me when I learned about how he truly felt playing Balki.

I wouldn’t touch this reboot with a 39 1/2 foot pole. If Bronson and Mark aren’t involved, I’m not interested.

Default Reboot

Sounds like a bad idea all the around....gender flipping in a lot of reboots seems like a trend from Higgins (Magnum PI) to The Equalizer and many reboot shows in between.

I think I'm going to have to agree. You just can't have Perfect Strangers without those two. I would rather stick with the old show. It has plenty of episodes.

^^^ The show having plenty of episodes only makes why it isn't shown on any network these days even more of a mystery. Seriously, what the heck and because it isn't on these days, another question that I have is how long has it been since it was on any TV network?

God bless you always!!!

The show has been on Hulu for a while, and it was just added to HBO Max as well. I have both.

I believe the last it was on TV in the US was in 2007 on the channel Ion Television, a relatively obscure channel. Before that would have been on TV Land in 2003. It seems that any time the show aired, it would only stay on the channel for a short while. So, Perfect Strangers have had a history of being poorly treated in reruns. From 2008 to 2017, the only ways to see the show was to get the Season 1 and 2 DVD or illegally stream it.

^^^ TV Land and the ION networks obviously must not have given the show that great of a time slot.

God bless you always!!!

It expired from Hulu a couple of days ago.

Yeah, I saw that now. Also, it looks like it's not on HBO Max either, despite Wikipedia claiming so. That's weird though. Why did they move Family Matters and Full House from Hulu to HBO Max, but not Perfect Strangers?

Are Step By Step and Hangin' With Mr. Cooper on HBO Max? All five of those shows disappeared from Hulu at the same time.
