Default Carl substituting for James

Carl Dixon (Moses Gunn) came on at the ending of fourth season as Florida's future husband, and he had a good chemistry with Evans. He is very good actor and at the same footing as Florida and James acting in feature films. But his character was eliminated by moving Carl and Florida to Arizona at end of fourth season.

If producers would have brought back Carl character in the fifth season-with assumption that Florida would have also stay, I think it would have given the show more energy. Carl could have tame some of JJ shenanigans, and have him faceoff with Bookman, Alderman Davis and Sweetdaddy

The majority of Good Times Fans HATED Carl and wished that the Ben, the man Florida met in Florida's Night Out would have been her Husband if they wanted to marry off Florida again as Ben was also Widowed himself and had grown Children like Florida and was a nice man. They were DISGUSTED that GT married off Florida to an ATHEIST....Even Esther Rolls put her foot down and called out that Florida, a Devout Christian Woman should NEVER marry an ATHEIST..... Ben in FNO was also Christian, IIRC....

You know the old saying..."love conquer all, even religions (or lack of)

I really think Carl being an atheist was an afterthought. Note that after their first meet between Carl and Florida, the subject of being an atheist did not come up again.

I could see there being alpha male conflict between JJ and Carl. I think JJ would resent Carl coming into "HIS home" trying to dominate him and other. Once James died, JJ started taking more of an authoritative role

You have a point there, but I think Florida could have played a balancing act between them as she was still the most senior authoritative in the household. And give JJ a full time job so he won't be hanging around all day.

I started to dislike the show after James died. The episodes with Carl were okay, but when GT decided to completely wipe him out like he never existed, I began to despise the show.

I only love Good Times for the James years.

James WAS the show.

I liked Carl but he was a mediocre substitute. Besides, there’s no way that in real life, a devout christian like Florida would go ahead and marry an atheist like Carl. She would’ve at least gotten to know him for a year before going ahead and marrying him. And just imagine if this was a soap opera.

Season 5 was ridiculous. It was so loose and all over the place. The thought of Thelma, Michael, and J.J. being left behind in the apartment with Wilona “chaperoning” was beyond dumb and an insult to the viewers intelligence. They could’ve at least had an aunt or something being sent by Florida to look after the trio.

I wonder if it was even legal for JJ, Thelma and Micheal living in the project since they were all single and over eighteen.
