Default Is Taxi a 70s show or 80s show?

Sure it stated in the 70s, but there were only 37 out of 114 ep in the 70s. Also it has more of a 80s feel to it. For example, the character of Louie, played by Danny DeVito, was one of the most greedy obnoxious, self-centered characters ever. In other words a very 80s character. Don't get me wrong he makes the show! Anther thing is the they don't do controversial jokes or plots, at least not often. What do you guys think?

Ran from 78-83, so both. Andy Kaufmann, Judd Hirsch, and Christopher Lloyd made the show. Devito sucked on it.

Just personal opinion. I don't like Andy Kaufman and he could have left the show the first year and would not have been missed, although Latka was an endearing character until he became his alter ego (and Kaufman doing his stupid bizarro "humor").

Danny DeVito was great in this show, and most people agree because he went on to be an A List actor throughout the 1980's to 2000's, and still works today.

I don't think Danny DeVito sucked on Taxi. His portrayal of Louie DePalma, one of the nastiest bosses in TV history turned out to be one of the funniest and best sitcom characters of all-time. Even TV Guide ranked him No. 1 as far as characters go.

To me, the show has/had a very strong late 70's vibe, almost like it's perpetually 1977 on the show, especially with all the New York stuff.

Kind of how like Barney Miller ALWAYS feels like a mid-70's show, with every episode happening in 1975-76.

1970's show in my opinion but the series definitely had its' feet in both decades. Anyhow, in regards to the Louie character. Danny DaVito played "Louie" to perfection on this series. I remember watching Taxi when it was first on and I remember that original episode where Louie was up the cage yelling and screaming and being obnoxious and then he comes out of the cage and everyone sees how short he really is. That was one of the best scenes in all of TV history, IMHO. The character of Latka was great. Again, IMHO, when they tried to evolve the character of Latka into all the "other" personalities such as Vince Farrari (I think that was the name), anyway to me that was a negative on the show. And of course the addition of Reverend Jim was fantastic. From the beginning, personally, I don't think the character of Jon added much to the show.
