TV Danielle Harris to Reprise Molly Tilden on "The Conners", Brian Austin Green to Guest

"The Conners" Brings Back Darlene's Former "Roseanne" Rival — First Look
by Michael Ausiello
March 30, 2021

ABC announced Tuesday that Danielle Harris will reprise her Season 5 "Roseanne" role as Molly Tilden, AKA Darlene’s high school rival for David’s affection, in the April 7 episode of "The Conners".

Although Darlene and Molly were enemies back in the day, they find themselves 30 years later having had similar lives and become close.

Meanwhile, "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum Brian Austin Green has booked a two-episode arc on "The Conners" as Jeff, a quirky, free spirit traveler who lives out of his van. The network has not revealed when his first episode will air.

In more casting news, "Murphy Brown" alum Candice Bergen — who guest-starred earlier this season as Ben’s mom, Barb — will return for two more episodes. Her next airdate is also TBA.

I welcome the return of Molly, and am interested to see how that reintroduction goes. The Tilden family arrived around the height of the original show.

Doesn't sounds like her sister Charlotte will make appearances.

How can Molly’s mom be alive now when she was dead in “Roseanne”? And Becky going to Molly’s funeral was odd because they never ever met.

Yeah, I thought that right away when Molly was telling Jackie that she moved back home with her parents ! I was like Parents ?? What ?? Her and her sister Charlotte were being raised by their single Dad ! And also I thought they moved away ? Sure they did , because remember the old couple who were nudists moved into the Tildens home on Roseanne ?!

Maybe the woman was Mr. Tilden's second wife? Maybe he ended up remarrying and she was Molly's stepmother ? IDK ? But still doesn't explain how they suddenly still live next door to the Connors ?

This is just another in a long line of continuity errors. The Conners must take place in an alternate universe than Roseanne.

I haven't seen the new episodes with her yet, and only vaguely remember her from the original Roseanne series.

A few points though
-Yes, maybe her dad re-married and she refers to her parents as dad and step-mom.
-Family can move out of house. Rent it to someone else. Return back to that same house.

Probably few pay very close attention and remember the details of those specifics from the original series, but the writers could probably do better. It's one thing to specifically exclude from the original series, but in these cases, it's probably better to be as close as possible.

Also, the writers are over-using the act of killing off of characters. They did it already for Roseanne. Then here. Is Katey Sagal's character next as she has her own show now, Rebel?

On another note with The Conners, do these special guest stars like Candace Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Fred Savage, Brian Austin Green, really help the series draw in more viewers? What happened to Mary Steenburgen as another neighbor? I saw the first episode with Candace on, and from all these guest actors, It seems very underwhelming roles for The Conners. At least Will & Grace and Friends, back in the day, used celebrity or familiar actors in a more useful way.

It was really sad. Poor Darlene. Poor Molly.

There's no way the Tildens live next door to the Conners. As you mentioned, they left and an old couple moved in. But also, in this episode itself, we see the outside of the Tilden house, and it in no way resembles the Conner house. Yet back when the Bowmans lived in that house, the houses were identical row houses (with the Bowmans' house being upgraded).

Also, it's very clear from the episode itself that Molly and Jackie don't originally recognize each other. It takes a moment for recognition to set in, which would not be the case if the Tildens had lived next door for 30 years.

It's clear the Tildens still live in the area, though, as Darlene seems to walk to their house, and the new Mrs. Tilden attended Roseanne's funeral, or at least a gathering.

I'm sort of torn on these episodes. On the one hand, it was cool to see Molly, and it felt like a throwback to the original series. On the other hand, the fact that we don't see Ty or Charlotte Tilden, and there's no mention of them, and we instead see a mother who didn't exist in the original series, feels very off.

I guess I mixed her up with another char, I thought her mom was “needlebutt” on the original series. It’s been a while since I’ve watched old seasons.

"Needlebutt" was Kathy Bowman, Todd's mom (who was based on real-life Roseanne producer Marcy Carsey).

Also, kind of dumb and another instance of poor writing:

Darlene considering or trying to sell airline tickets to Hawaii, given by Molly, originally intended for Darlene and Molly.

No US airline allows one to sell airline tickets already issued to one. At most Darlene could get a refund maybe possible, but the last episode Darlene was still thinking of selling the tickets.
