I am trying the understand the need to live with Ed inside his garage. I can understand the need for a job but not the need to live with him which is looking like he was living on the street. This is not explained in the 1st episode, where was his family? He did mention that his father ran away when he was a child but what his mother? Or are viewers supposed to believe he was just living on the street?

It comes up in Season 1 I think. His Mom passed away and an Aunt raised him in another country he moved back to LA. It was my impression that he was homeless.

That's the impression I have also since he didnt mention anything about his living situation or family in 1st episode.
