Gene Rayburn had many repetitive isms, call them Rayburn-isms!!! All lat instead of all that, BUT, spoken really loudly, roight instead of right when he seemed to impersonate an upper crust British ism, right off the bat, when a contestant got the $100 answer on super match, now wait a minute, when he wanted to correct someone. I also truly can't recall him acting all that much aside from Match Game, maybe a guest star role here and there....same with Brett Somers! She only had minor roles scattered about, on Odd Couple, once on Mary Tyler Moore , did I miss any? Guess Match game produced these "stars"!!!!! Honestly never heard of either one before MG!!!!

Rayburn had done a lot of work in other forms of entertainment, like on Broadway and in radio.

On YouTube, there are clips of a Love Boat episode where Gene Rayburn and Fannie Flagg play a couple of singles who develop a relationship, but her dog becomes the third wheel.
I've also seen a Fantasy Island episode where Gene and some other guy portray feuding game show hosts. Ol' Rayburn was very selective about his roles. ![]() A bunch of game show hosts also guest-hosted on the Tonight Show fairly frequently. Gene used to talk about having to sub on that show, I know Bert Convy did a few, and Richard Dawson apparently did it enough to be considered a contender to take over when Johnny Carson retired. I'd actually like to see how those guys performed. Antenna TV still shows Tonight Show highlights, but I'm not sure if they ever play any episodes with guest hosts. |
