Default Were you entertained by "drunk" sitcom characters?

I never found the humor when some of my favorite characters were not they normal selves and stumbling around all drunk. Not sure why that was supposed to be funny because in real life I wouldnt want to see a drunk relative or spouse in the house

Even though these characters was great I did not like them when they were drunk

Usually no. But there have been some good ones. Otis the town drunk was always fun on The Andy Griffith Show. Their PC decision to have him removed is part of why the color seasons are so much weaker, besides Don Knotts leaving of course. On M*A*S*H, Margaret Houlihan was funny in a drunk episode.

The ultimate pretend was Foster Brooks on the Dean Martin roasts.

And the Bob Newhart episode with Mr. Karlin, and Jerry- "More goo to go"

I liked Otis on Andy Griffith - good acting - funny, quirky, and endearing/sincere.

And the guy at the bar/club (Dick Wilson) on Bewitched had the best reactions to the magical shenanigans.

George Jefferson was mean enough when sober. I can see him being an unbearable drunk.

I can only take drinks in small doses. I enjoyed Uncle Woodrew from S&S and Vinton Harper when he was drunk in an episode of MF.

As a rule, no, I tend to almost always find such depictions of drunkenness to be boorish and quite annoyingly unfunny. The attempts at humor of having a regular character get soused and act drunk never remotely amused me. Quite the opposite, usually.

The exceptions? When it's done in a VERY broad, almost cartoonish way, like with Hal Smith's appearances as "Otis," or Leon Errol doing his rubber-legs routine in his two-reelers, or perhaps even little bit-parts by guys in old films like Jack Norton or Arthur Houseman, who pop up like genial nuisances causing problems for our main characters. In these cases, there's a kind of over-the-top comic surrealism that makes them amusing to me. But these are really the only cases. Otherwise, I hate it.

I guess it depends on the character. One of the funniest scenes ever in All in the Family was when Archie was drunk and locked in the basement.

In general, probably not. I never thought Foster Brooks was funny. But Arthur with Dudley Moore is one of my favorite movies.
