Why Did Roy Get The "Chuck Cunningham" Treatment??

I mean, he did serve a DUAL purpose being Oscar's Accountant and all. Perhaps Oscar fired him when Roy didnt stand up for Oscar in Roy's LAST OC episode ever, The Blackout???

In the later episodes, you didn't see a lot of the poker gang Vinnie, Speed and Roy. They were frequently seen in the first two seasons.

Roy was done after Season 1. He was never seen in the newer apartment set-up. Vinnie and Speed were, but sparingly.

The Odd Couple was actually two different TV series. The first season is really an adaptation of the movie The Odd Couple. The show is filmed on the same set as the movie, the Pigeon sisters were from the movie, the poker game such an important part of the movie had a significant presence in the first season, and Tony Randall's portrayal of Felix was similar to the way Jack Lemmon played the character. The second season is almost a completely new show, the Felix character has been reimagined to a certain extent, Murray is now a stand alone character (not just a poker player), the Pigeon sisters are gone, the set has changed, and the poker game is an insignificant part of the series (the character of Speed made only 5 more appearances and Vinnie 4 during the rest of the series run). Roy would have added an extra salary to the production budget of the small handful of episodes where the poker game is a plot point and really towards what end.

Great points. And Roy also had no particular "personality" as did Vinnie. Like you said, outside of Poker there was not much need for these guys, Murray the Cop however could be worked into many episodes.

The first season of The Odd Couple was a pretty good show but it didn't become the classic we know and love until it was revamped for the second season with a live audience, just like Happy Days.

Sometimes personnel decisions are made because of show decisions. Garry Marshall thought it would be a good idea to have Oscar date other women on the show so he had to fire Joan Hotchkis, who played Nancy Cunningham. I guess Garry Marshall was fond of the name Cunningham.
