Default When were you most angry at Archie?

Most of Archie's antics were fun to laugh at. But a few times his antics crossed the line and actually made me angry. I did not like it when Archie baptized Joey without the parent's consent. That could not happen in real life and while Archie meant well, it was a bridge too far for me and would be so angry at him in real life.

The cousin Liz episode Archie is at his most cruel. Yes Archie is very materialistic and wants the silver. That is typical Archie. But when he confronts and tries to blackmail Liz to tell the school board about her life was a bridge too far. In those days, a teacher would be fired for being openly gay. Not only did he openly want to grab the silver but he wanted to humiliate and punish Liz for being who she was. I thought even for Archie this was horrendous. I found nothing funny about the show and was angry.

Archie in blackface is pretty bad too but the cousin Liz episode always made me angry even as a little kid watching it.

I think we all realize the characters are not real. That does not mean we cant discuss them. This is what this forum is about.
The sets/houses are not real either but we can still discuss them. This forum is full of all kinds of discussions about characters and everyone is aware they are not real.

^^^ That was so beyond evil.

Archie really pissed me off in The Draft Dodger episode. Archie's friend "Pinky" put him in his place but good.

I tried to remain objective about the entire show.

Foremost, I always tried to keep in mind that the writers were TRYING to push buttons. I can't imagine myself, for example, ever writing a letter to the producers complaining about content, because I figure they would be jumping up and down with glee, like a buncha little school girls, celebrating their triumph.

That in mind, there were a few times when my stomach just sank with a "I can't believe he just did/said that . Even if he believed that, there was nothing to be gained by exposing it"

I also remained ever mindful of the fact that no matter how rotten a person they portrayed him to be, no matter how big a villain's cape they draped around his shoulders.....he was THE ONE person who got up in the morning 5 days a week, and went out and earned a living to put a roof over the rest of their heads, while absorbing abuse constantly over how ashamed he should be for being himself.

Caused me on more than a few occasions to think "Ever forward Archie, ever forward!"

The draft dodger was another good one where Archie goes too far. Good one.

The actress who played Nellie Olsen on Little House really loved being the mean character. However even she thought once the character went too far in the episode "Music Box." She even confronted the writers about it and believe it or not said something like "this is taking things too far. This is beyond evil even for Nellie" Its the episode where Nellie is jealous of the stuttering girl's friendship with Laura. Laura steals a music box and Nellie blackmails Laura to be mean to her friend. Nellie plans parties to humiliate the stuttering girl and makes Laura take part.

So even mean or bigoted characters do go too far sometimes (yes I know its the writers).

Sometimes Archie was right with his fury. IMHO, the "Mike comes into money" episode, it would be completely right for Archie to lash out when the family was struggling. But sometimes it was a bridge too far.

Cousin Liz definitely. The mistreatment of Edith bothered me. I can't laugh at abuse. His bigotry didn't bother me because he's ignorant. But, the way he treated Edith and Cousin Liz aggravated me.

Yes, those are excellent examples. But Edith, as usual was kind and compassionate. AND FIRM. On the rare occasions she stood up to Archie, he backed down. Edith may have been naive about a lot of things but she had a very high EQ.

Edith had a deep sense of decency and there was BO WAY she was going to let Archie undermine it.

Archie was indeed a mixed bag. The writers deserve a lot of credit or giving his character its nuances and contradictions. Archie certainly had his faults, but for the most part, he was reliable and loyal. Especially when it came to keeping a roof over everyone’s head.

Funny thing is, there really ARE people JUST LIKE Archie in this world...

My landlord (when I was in college) was a FINE example.....the crap he would spew to my face made me feel like I was listening to a 6ft. 250 lb "Archie" and his name was "Red"....
