Default Charles Shaughnessy doesn't think there'll ever be a series reboot of The Nanny

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainm...ectid=11848584

Quote:
TV reboots are all the rage at the moment with Full House, The Gilmore Girls and X Files all being given second lives of late. So could The Nanny be next?

Probably not according to Mr Sheffield himself, actor Charles Shaughnessy.

"There's been talk about a stage musical," the 62-year-old said when asked about a potential series reboot.

"There's been talk about a revival series. There's been talk about a one-off limited show, like a Gilmore Girls-type thing."

But here's why Shaughnessy says it won't happen.

"The whole concept of The Nanny is a nanny to these three kids. When those three kids are all grown up, there is no need for a nanny," he said, according to Radar Online.

"Other than getting a bunch of the same actors 20 years later and 20 years older together again, I don't know how it would work."

The Nanny ran for six seasons, ending in 1999 in a two-part finale in which Fran gave birth to twins and Niles and C.C. got engaged.

Last year the actor who played Niles revealed to news.com.au that he wasn't impressed that his character ended up with his arch-nemesis.

"That's the only part that I never really bought, to tell you the truth," Daniel Davis said.

"C.C. and I had been so oil and water - I didn't buy that we would end up married. But I had to play it, because that's what they wrote."

"The only reason I thought it could have worked would be if they were planning a spin-off, like The Niles and C.C. Show, which I would have loved - but they didn't go with that idea."

Even if most of the cast were willing to reunite to bring the show back to life, it's doubtful Madeline Zima who played Gracie Sheffield would be keen.

In 2013 the actor told the TV Page that filming the sitcom "wasn't a fun experience".

"They treated me more like a prop than like a human being," she said.

"At a certain point I can't pretend like it was some great experience anymore. And it bums so many people out because they love the show. They are like 'What's wrong with this girl? Why didn't she like it?' But I would rather be honest. I have been diplomatic and neutral and politically correct long enough. I don't have to do that s**t anymore."

It's probably because of what happened towards the end of the series.

Fran Drescher: I’d be up for a reboot of The Nanny
“As far as a reboot goes, I would be open to it if somebody wanted to do it — but if nobody wants to do it, then I'm currently trying to develop something else," said Drescher, who adds that she keeps in touch with her former castmates.

A stage musical would be great! The show just cried out for one (it was kind of a takeoff on The Sound of Music to begin with!)

A lot of the situations they had on the original show would have lent themselves to great stage songs, particularly the theme of marriage across "class" lines - both Fran and Max and Niles and CC.

CC's change in personality once she sleeps with Niles in Yetta's Letters reminds me of all the "I'm loosening up / being myself / saying how I really feel" songs in Broadway and Disney, such as "Let It Go" in Frozen.

As for Daniel not buying Niles/CC - I think there was always sexual charge behind the insults. If they could have gone right from Season 4, where the some things happened that seemed like they were moving toward a relationship (The kiss in The Pen Pal; the date in The Nose Knows; and CC's emotional reaction to Niles' heart attack) to Season 6, when they got together, it would have worked better. But because Lane had to leave for a while to have a baby, they had CC have to go to a mental health facility because of Niles' treatment of her (i.e., pranks). Kind of messed up the progression toward a relationship, and really wasn't necessary.

So, yes, the progression of the relationship and how it happened wasn't entirely believable - BUT I don't agree they were oil and water. I think they were very alike in some ways, perhaps more than Fran and Max were.

I think they could have done a 10-years-later spinoff with Fran, Maxwell, and the twins living in LA, and Maxwell working in TV. But now - feels like they’ve waited a little too long.

I have to admit I'm also not a huge fan of the moving-to-California ending. I think having the series end on a high note from the standpoint of the success of the company was a good idea. But that could have been done with Yetta's Letters winning the Tony, and/or some other successful plays.

I would love a revival with the original cast. It would be interesting to see how they are doing 20 years later. Good writers could make it interesting. She could easily be a nanny to the grandkids bevaise that does happy. Or she's opened a nanny day care from the house. Just b3vause she was no longer the nanny. It was being the nanny that got her where she was.

I'm probably in the minority that would rather a revival than a reboot.
