Confused Wally, What Are You Thinking??

Today I watched that episode where everyone's laughing chubby friend (I forget his name) is being yelled at (again) by that ugly witch Ginger she even goes full blown insane as she pours 2 glasses of water over poor Wally's (I just remembered his name) head!! How in the world or why in the world would anybody ever want to go out with this horror? First she's no beauty and fat to boot and her personality is an absolute nightmare.

Couldn't Wally figure out if she's a wild banshee now while she's trying to trap him imagine the banshee she'll be after she's got him saddled with a ball and chain!! Holy Moly, I'd have run the first time she opened her big fat mouth.

And while I'm wondering, why is it that Wally is always stuck with these extremely fat obnoxious women? Every time he's seen with a girl she's always at least 200 pounds. Just because Wally's an ounce or 2 overweight doesn't mean he deserves nothing but 2 ton Tillie's for a girlfriend. Man, that guy Wally couldn't catch a break, the Nelson boys got all the hot babes and poor Wally gets the dregs. If I was that actor I would have asked the writers set him up with babes too, why play the fool all the time?

Great thread! I’m always up for discussing a great O & H ep. Kris Plays Cupid was indeed a fun one. However Wally’s no Prince Charming either, and is a moocher and cheapskate to boot. He also doesn’t get any high marks for reliability-his MIA stunt in Bedtime Story is a perfect example. Sorry, but in my mind Ginger is about the best he’s ever going to get, unless he’d rather go solo.

Always thought there was too much of Wally in O & H anyways, would have liked to see the other frat brothers in more visible roles at times. Also didn’t care too much for Joe Randolph-another cheapskate and moocher, but loved his ditzy wife Clara.

Love the ending where Ginger chases Wally around with a frying pan going “I’ll sweetie-pie you”. LMAO she was a terror.

Wink Wally Vs. Joe/Parley/Don Defore

Yes, Wally may have had a few flaws, but still the punishment (Ginger & nothing but fat floozies) far outweighs the crime. Though Wally was a moocher and never had enough money to pay even for a Coke (that doesn't mean he's cheap, he was just always broke and had to mooch, otherwise he'd have to get a job) but at least Wally was a lovable lazy broke mooch. As opposed to Joe (the Don Defore replacement) who was an outright sneaky moocher and a schemer to get Ozzie to do his work all the time and always foot the bill. Then literally run away as Ozzie was left sputtering "Joe, Joe, Joe?" Of course, Ozzie acting like a mealy mouthed wus didn't help out the situation any either. Joe knew a patsy when he saw one and like a dirty sneak he took advantage of wishy washy fool Ozzie all the time.

But one big difference between Joe & Wally is that Joe was just as prosperous as Ozzie, they both had money but Joe was too cheap to spend it. Wally couldn't spend it since he didn't have it. Wally was almost forced to mooch whereas Joe was just a cheap b--tard.

Wally didn't really take advantage of Rick or Dave, he mooched off them a lot but he wasn't sneaky about it and at least he laughed and made you feel good while he was taking your money. Wally was a good guy all around, but I can't say that for Joe or that other sneak Don Defore replacement Parley Bear (forget his character's name) he was just as rotten as Joe. Guess the writers gave up trying to create separate personalities for Ozzie's revolving next door neighbors and just gave them all the same Don Defore's character's sneaky mooching maneuvering louse personality.

They must have put a For Sale sign up on Ozzie's neighbor's house whenever one moved out, "Cheap Sneaky Moochers Only". I can't say any of those things about Wally. He was a good egg who just loved going to college for 30 years.!!

Good analysis of Wally--and Parley's character was Darby ("Darb")--this was his last name, not sure I ever heard his first.

Then there was Frank Cady's character, Doc (Williams?), who wasn't on as much.

I think Wally's funniest episode was when he swore an ostrich blocked a stop sign, and this was his defense for running it. Somehow he got Dave to defend him on the charge.

YES!!! Wally’s Traffic Ticket is a classic ep; the O & H equivalent of Lucy Does A Commercial. I totally love this Wally ep. and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see The Adv. of O & H at it’s very best. An absolutely stunning ep.

Very thoughtful post. But I don’t share your benevolent take on Wally; he was a lazy-a## - he could have gotten a job and earned $ like Rick and David did. And he often took advantage of Dave& Rick -although I do like him a bit more than Joe Randolph. And I agree with you here - Joe was a cheap ba##ard. But I LOVE the way Clara didn’t take any b.s. from him; she’d screech at him to get his act together-and boy, he sure did WITH HER. I found him irritating but totally loved Clara-ditzy as h#ll except when it came to handling her cheap-o hubby. She was a hoot.

And yes Ozzie did often play a wuss in the show. In real life he was the complete opposite; a rather forceful control-freak and astute businessman. He ably negotiated many of the show-related and family member contracts. He stopped just short of becoming a lawyer; he was studying to become when when his band took off. Maybe that’s why there are so many lawyer-related eps prominent in the later third of the show’s run.

YES I AM a serious fan of the show. And IMO, on the show he could sometimes be a wuss; letting Joe Randolph get away with murder (never-ending mooching and cheapness) or kowtowing to Harriet.

I never had an issue with Ginger. She was attractive in a non-conventional way. And waaaay too good for Wally. And she was NOT fat at all, in my opinion.

Wally could be funny no doubt, but IMO there was TOO MUCH of him on the show for my taste. Would have like to seen some of the other fraternity brothers featured more often. But this just my personal taste of course, as others love Wally’s prominence in the series.

Lol Warning Warning Ginger Ahead!

Maybe Dan has never seen O&H, might explain his bewilderment over the self evident observations. If Ginger wasn't obviously a fat beast then Wally must have been another Barney Fife. Anyone who would marry a thing like Ginger acting & looking the way she did BEFORE she trapped the guy into marriage deserves the misery he asked for. And I'd like to have a dime for everytime wuss Ozzie DIDN'T say a simple NO!! everytime one of his neighborhood users dropped by to mooch or get sap Ozzie to do what they are too lazy to do. Though once in every 100 shows or more Ozzie did manage to eek out a no, meekly of course.

Now as far as Wally, well, if Wally was good enough for Ricky (in real life) to be at his wedding he's good enough for me.

Nice photo. Really sad that Ricky lived a short life, and also Skip Young (Wally) made it only to his early 60s. I didn't realize until recently that Plumstead was Skip's real last name...!

Great photo, and Skip Young was very different than the unreliable moocher he played in O & H. Regarding Ginger, or anyone else for that matter, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You may think Ginger’s the creature from the Blue Lagoon but I don’t! She’s no Elizabeth Taylor but I think she’s reasonably pleasant-looking, and IMO, is a much better looking female than Wally a male.

Oh, I don't know, throw a polka dot dress and a wig on Wally & he'd make a better looking girl than Ginger. Wally may not be another Roger Moore but he's a good looking guy. (Not that I go that way.) I like that he's a couple ounces overweight, maybe because I am too. But Ginger, well, there's no hope.
