Default Was Hazel The Maid For Dorothy First? Or George First?

I know back in the sixties the scripts were inaccurate in following the storyline, Writers and Producers probably thinking the shows would be one offs?

I know on some episodes Hazel is mentioned as Missy's childhood maid?

But I maybe wrong? But does Steve Baxter say Hazel was the families maid when he and George were children?

Another inconsistency in the writing. George had a different sister and a different brother in law in the first season. Also there was never any mention of a younger brother named Steve before season 5? If I recall correctly?

Hazel was the maid for Dorothy's (Missy's) family since childhood.

An inconsistency is a Thanksgiving episode when George's younger sister appeared with her husband who said she was a lousy cook. That's the only episode she's in and she's never mentioned again. After that it seems as if Deidre is George's only sister.

Agreed, but did brother Steve Baxter throw a wrench in the storyline? mentioning he had Hazel as a maid since childhood?

I don't know, and it's really odd that Steve is never mentioned until season 5. What's up with that?

I don't remember Steve ever saying Hazel was his childhood maid. He could have, I just never picked up on it if he did. Hazel was definitely supposed to have been Missy's family maid though, as this is talked about in several different episodes. In one she talks about how she got a hot young Missy ready for her first date. I don't believe Hazel used the term hot young though.

Season 5 Episode 1 Steve says he knows Hazel since he was a kid. I guess that confused me. I guess they meant Steve was a kid when George was married to Dorothy and he was acquainted with Hazel back then.

Yeah, who knows? The writers in that last season of Hazel didn't seem to follow the history of the show at all.

Steve does look a lot younger than George. I'm sure he was just a kid when George married Missy.

What was Hazel doing living with a new family of Baxter's in the first place. The Baxter's were out of the country but they were returning at some point (they left their only child behind so he wouldn't miss school). Their house wasn't being sold, it would need upkeep and this was Harold's home, why put him through more upheaval than necessary. Hazel was going to earn her salary just babysitting their son cooking and cleaning for him around the clock and taking care of their home.

Also Season 5 Episode 1 featured Sylvia Field (Mrs. Wilson) from Dennis the Menace as the rich man's wife.

As mentioned he said he knew Hazel since he was a kid. (Then he said George didn't know how to handle her, and then bragged he'd let her know he's the boss. Enter Hazel, who laid down the law to Steve!)

Hazel was with Dorothy's family, and it's possible Steve would have known her. But it would be highly unlikely.

Off topic, re the above--after Hazel laid down the way she wanted things run, she served a meal, at which she gave Steve the third degree about his vitamins. When she suspected he hadn't taken any, she counted all 1000 of them, and proceeded to interrupt Steve in the middle of his real estate transaction with Sylvia Field and Ernest Truex (Sylvia's real-life husband), and confronted him about not taking the vitamins. Right there, she should have gotten canned, since Steve "knew how to handle her."

Does anyone know if the original comic strip mentioned anything about this?

Hazel originally was just a single-panel cartoon appearing in magazines, so it wouldn't go into details like family members, work history etc. There was a later daily newspaper comic strip where they could develop more background and info as they went along, but I don't think it went into much depth.
