What do the little boxes in Classic Concentration mean?

On Classic Concentration I noticed that attached to the contestant podiums are little boxes and i'm curious to know what they mean? I also noticed that whenever Alex Trebek tapped the boxes a yellow border with stars used to appear and then a red border with an X appeared later on. Did this mean a winner and what did the other symbol mean as well?

First of all, Rest In Peace Alex Trebek, former host of Classic Concentration.

Those boxes lit up in gold with black stars to indicate one game had been won. For a time, the game was a best two out of three match to play for the car, and for a time only one car round was played per episode.

The time the boxes lit up red with an "X" meant one strike, meaning the player lost one game. If they lost 2 games, they were gone for good.
