Blanche who wasn't attractive at all runs off with the exterminator and only got back with Barney because he dumped her. And then Barney asked her "is it really over Blanche? Damm was he that submissive?

Because he obviously had low self-esteem. I agree, she was no prize. LOL he’d be better of with dirty magazines and a blow-up doll. He should have told her to “bug off”

But Murray was too smart to want someone as dumb as Archie as a friend. He put up with Archie, in the beginning, because he had to as they were business partners. Over time they formed a grudging friendship.

Barney was about Archie’s speed.

I think to get a fair answer to this, you have to recognize that Norman Lear and his band of cohorts (Nicholl, West, & Ross) had an emasculating agenda. Any male willing to stand his ground being portrayed as an anachronistic villain, while celebrating shrews such as Maude and Weezey as heroes.

It was all part of the lib "secret sauce" that Lear was pandering

Sometimes it's actually a superior outcome if you can get the spouse to believe they are the one who wants out.

When they are the one sneaking away, at least they aren't pounding on your chest, calling you a rat, and bawling about how they "gave you" the best years of their life.

Also, Archie married The Dingbat and was buddies with Barney to make himself (Archie) look smarter and feel better about himself. I have a few family members who are the same way. It's a low self-esteem complex.

This is the only worthy comment in the thread. People get caught up into seeing these characters as real people instead of fictional entertainment, or in too many cases, propaganda. As I've written here before, the ironic thing is that as popular as Norman Lear's shows were, the country moved to the right during their runs.
