Nanny & the Professor is one of my all-time favorite shows. The magic angle was subtle and most of the scripts settled in nicely, resulting in a well-cast and well-executed sitcom -- really a delightful series.
It had much more in common with other domestic sitcoms of its time than it did with Mary Poppins, in my opinion, and was a cut above most. A series that just doesn't get the exposure it deserves anymore, sadly. |

I never thought of it that way and still don't think it is. But even if it were, who cares--this is a good family show in its own right.

It was Mary Poppins "inspired" the way that The Patty Duke Show was Parent Trap inspired and Daniel Boone was Davy Crockett inspired and My Three Sons was Shaggy Dog inspired and Bewitched was I Married a Witch/Bell Book & Candle inspired -- they went their own way as developed into series but there is a certain similarity in the initial concept/impulse of the show.
The creator of the "Nanny", AJ Crothers, was a screenwriter for Walt Disney in the early 60's, so he would have been well aware of the film. |

I wouldn’t call it a ripoff either, but there are certainly some similarities, in a British nanny with magic, though Nanny’s wasn’t specifically shown (but you heard that familiar chime). It’s an OK show.
