The closings are not permanent.
While the company calls the closures temporary, it did not name a date for a possible resumption of business, saying it will "continue to monitor the situation closely." https://www.npr.org/sections/coronav...rs-on-thursday |

Does Regal Theaters also own the Cinemark and Century Theaters chains? I'm surprised that Regal Theaters is going broke because they seemed to be in almost every mall and Cinemark and Century Theaters were competition with Regal Theaters. I guess the popularity of watching movies on Roku and Netflix really hurt Regal Theaters a lot

I hope the close is permanent. I think theaters should be a thing of the past. With all the streaming services out there, they can still make money off new movies. It's more convenient watching movies at home. You can watch it on your own time instead of theirs and you don't have to worry what seat you're getting since some theaters assign seats to their tickets. |

While I love streaming services, I like the experience in the theater, too, and hope that doesn't go away. I love our 10-theater Cinemark as well as our local theater, and hope they're able to recover post-Covid.
There's something about watching a movie in a theater, with the giant screen, the expensive popcorn, and meeting with friends, that can't be duplicated with home streaming. Plus, theaters provide jobs for 100,000 Americans. |

Movie theaters have been in trouble for decades. Television put a lot of them out of business in the 1950s.

Movie theaters have still been going strong long since that point... It was this year's shutdowns and some not being comfortable going out like they used to that caused the closing.

I should have added that small-town theaters have been declining in numbers long before the advent of streaming video services and coronavirus. My four-screen hometown theater closed in the early 2000s.

It sad that we now are forced to stay in our house. Getting out the house to see a movie was a nice way to get out and take in the moment. Plays in New York in limbo and wonder how that be in time. Half the nation it seems is in the house either working from home, tv watching, puzzle doing, and now come winter it will be cold to eat outside from take out food.

I love going to the movies ! To me it isn't the same as being home watching it on the TV ! It's nice to get out of the house, see the movie on the big screen, eat popcorn ( microwave popcorn at home is not the same ) !
![]() I really miss the movie theater! I really hope they come back after the pandemic !

Esp.within the last 10 years or so, the theaters have added bars and restaurants within the movie house ! If anything they have gained popularity in recent years until the pandemic shut them down!

Why I think movie theaters are dying in general is simply because as I mentioned in my previous post on this thread you can blame the popularity of the Amazon Fire Roku Amazon Prime Hulu Disney+ and Netflix for the soon to be dying movie theaters and I don't know how Regal Theaters survived because other movie theater chains such as Cinemark Tinseltown Century Theaters and the king of movie theater chains AMC Theaters are still successful. But what really started this is the death of drive-in movie theaters because ever since Dolby Digital Surround Sound debuted in the 70's movie theaters became a fad because you could really hear the action of the movies and really were thrilling to see. But I think Regal Theaters will be bought by another movie theater chain and be back in business soon enough
