TV Ryan Murphy's "Ratched" Set for Sept. 18th on Netflix

Ryan Murphy’s Nurse Ratched "Cuckoo’s Nest" Origin Series Starring Sarah Paulson Scores Netflix Order; Michael Douglas EPs
by Nellie Andreeva
September 6, 2017

In very competitive situation, Netflix has landed "Ratched", a marquee new drama series from Ryan Murphy, with Sarah Paulson set to star as a younger version of the diabolical Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and the film’s producer Michael Douglas set to executive produce alongside Murphy.

In one of the biggest deals of the year, which I hear followed a bidding war among Netflix, Hulu and Apple, "Ratched" scored a two-season, 18-episode, straight-to-series order at Netflix. Production on the drama, from Fox 21 TV Studios, is slated to begin sometime in mid-2018, with Murphy directing the opening episode as he does on all of his series.

Like he has done before, Emmy winner Murphy is taking a chance on a newcomer writer with "Ratched". The project was created by Evan Romansky who, fresh out of film school, penned the script on spec.

It was slipped to Murphy by CAA agent Joe Cohen. Murphy took it in, attached one of his muses, Emmy-winning "American Horror Story" and "American Crime Story" star Sarah Paulson, to play the title character and spent a year securing the rights to the character and the participation of the Saul Zaentz estate and Douglas.

"Ratched" is an origins story, beginning in 1947, which will follow Ratched’s (Paulson) journey and evolution from nurse to full-fledged monster.

The series will track her murderous progression through the mental health care system.

I would love to see the original nurse Louise Fletcher make a cameo.

Sarah Paulson on Playing Nurse Ratched
by Jackie Strause
Nov. 2, 2017

I’m excited about the "Ratched" development because it’s my first foray into producing and that feels like a natural progression. I feel the most comfortable already in sharing my voice and my opinions and really having a seat at the table without having that title. But now having that kind of credit, where I can actually feel like I belong there in official capacity feels very sweet that it came to me because of my relationship with Ryan [Murphy].

I didn't come to Ryan a fully formed actor. So much of how I have come to even approach my work was developed with him standing there. So, to have reached a moment in my work life where he wants to develop something with me or produce something with me is a real evolution of work put in, on both our parts. That makes it feel extra rewarding, validating and special so I look forward to doing it.

Sharon Stone and Cynthia Nixon Join Cast of Netflix's "Ratched"
by Clark Collis
Jan. 14, 2019

Producer Ryan Murphy announced Monday on Instagram that Sharon Stone and Cynthia Nixon will both be taking flight with Sarah Paulson in the TV series "Ratched", Netflix’s prequel to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

The cast will also feature Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Harriet Harris, Hunter Parrish, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, and Finn Wittrock.

‘RATCHED’ on Netflix starts shooting in a couple weeks,” wrote Murphy.

On behalf of myself and Ms. Sarah Catharine Paulson who plays the title role and is also a big fancy producer on it, we are thrilled to announce our amazing cast…a true murderers’ row of talent. So many of these actors are supremely talented folks who Sarah and I have both longed to work with… More to come, but come on…Sarah, Cynthia, Judy, Amanda and Sharon, all doing scenes together? I cannot WAIT.

Another demonstration of how pitiful American TV has become. A series based on a supporting character from a 45 year old movie that's been virtually forgotten. I have no doubt the series will be a bunch of 'powerful' women allegedly helping yet gleefully torturing evil masculine men in a mental hospital. What ****.

It's not "virtually forgotten". I know that the book is still read and discussed in high schools today, as well as the film.

Is everything a "liberal conspiracy" with you?

I'd like to see this show. I also enjoyed Louise Fletcher as the original Nurse Ratched.

When can we expect to see "Ratched"?

"Hollywood", which is a limited series, is coming out on May 1. "Ratched" is coming out in September, it’s a big fall show.

It’s a feminist psychological horror show. We’ve been done with that for a while. It’s the performance of Sarah Paulson’s life.

Sarah Paulson Channels Iconic Cuckoo's Nest Villainess in Netflix Prequel Series — First Look
by Michael Ausiello
July 29, 2020

Netflix has announced that "Ratched" — the Ryan Murphy/Ian Brennan-produced prequel series starring Murphy muse Sarah Paulson as the titular asylum nurse from hell — will premiere on Sept. 18.

Season 1 will consist of eight episodes.

Inspired by the iconic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest character, "Ratched" — which is set in 1947, 15 years before the events of the film — tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched, chronicling her evolution from fledgling nurse to full-blown villain.

The ensemble also includes Sharon Stone, Finn Wittrock, Sophie Okonedo, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Harriet Harris, Cynthia Nixon, Hunter Parrish, Amanda Plummer and Corey Stoll.
