I just got season one of Family Affair, and have been watching it all. I didn't watch this show as a kid, didn't appeal to me then, but considering the crap that is on today, realize just how precious this Sitcom/Drama really is, and the love that was put into this show. I seriously do miss shows like this one, and the Brady Bunch. Speaking of which, the episode I mention here has one of the Brady stars in it. Anyway, to the point.
In one episode of season one, Cissy starts to show a little rebellion due to the influence of one of her teachers, played brilliantly by Robert reed A.K.A. Mike Brady. One of the things she does is start calling Mr. French by his first name. Giles. But in a later episode, when she does a report on Mr. French to get a good grade, she asked Uncle Bill if he knew Mr. French's first name. Bill said it was Giles. Has anyone else noticed this contradiction? I still love this show, but wanted to point this out. |

I too started recently watching this fine series. But I did watch it as a kid, I think I was a year or so older than Jody at the time. Watching it now as I do all vintage series' today on DVD and once a week. About 3 weeks ago I saw the first season episode you cite, when Cissy does her school report and finds out Mr. French's name. I have not seen the second episode you cite yet, (except back in the '60's and don't remember it now) but according to what you wrote there isn't any discrepancy. You say in each episode they called him Giles, either you made a typo or there was no discrepancy. If it did happen in the show though, it wouldn't be the first time a show contradicts itself.
I'm watching the ME TV recordings, BUT Me TV skipped about 20 episodes, which makes me very tempted to buy the complete series that's commercially available. They did show all of Season 1 which I'm watching now, but they skipped episodes here and there from the rest of the series. Which is why you'd have to buy the Complete series pack, it'd be cheaper than buying Seasons 2-5 separately. Are you watching the commercially available versions and if so would you recommend me buying the whole series? So far, I'm still in Season 1 so I haven't missed anything (except for the 3 or so minutes Me TV edits out each show, which is reason enough I suppose to buy). |

I plan on buying all 5 seasons one season at a time. I would recommend it to anyone who likes classic TV. This show is clean and innocent, a wonderful show for kids to watch....

Cissy learns the Giles name in S1, Episode 13 with Kathryn Givney, "The Thursday Man."
The Robert Reed episode "Think Deep" was S1, Episode 14. No contradiction if the eps are shown in the order they originally aired (12/12 and 12/26, 1966). |
