I guess the thing was, though, that a chef works pretty much in private. Jack having the restaurant opened up more options for the series' writers. And the incompetent workers offered up more jokes. I think you could say that sitcoms don't need to make as much sense as dramas.
Robert Mandan was almost too good as the potential father-in-law. Someone like that would scare me off in a big way...
