Sad "Cheers" bar in Boston set to permanently close

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cheers-...oston-closing/

The "Cheers" bar at Boston's Faneuil Hall Marketplace is closing after two decades in business, CEO Markus Ripperger confirmed to CBS Boston on Tuesday. The iconic bar is a replica of the set for the popular sitcom "Cheers," which aired from 1982 to 1993.

It appears the bar was another casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. Ripperger said the pandemic and lack of assistance from the landlord played into the decision to close, according to CBS Boston.

The "Cheers" bar is set to close on August 30, CBS affiliate WGME reports. The location that originally inspired the iconic series, however, will remain open on Boston's Beacon Street.

While the TV show has been off the air for decades, the bar where everybody knows your name has remained a landmark.

The show birthed such stars as Ted Danson, Kirstie Alley and Shelley Long. In total, the cast and show received 117 Emmy nominations and won 28 Emmys.

I went to the bar a couple of years ago for my birthday and had a great time there. It's very small though.

Oh No

There goes another thing to be removed from my "Bucket List"...that and seeing the house that was used on Family Matters.

I'm sorry that you can’t go to the replica set.

It's not the actual bar that the show was based on, just a replica of the TV show set.

Sorry to see it go! If I'd ever visited Boston, I would have liked to have seen it.

I went to the real life bar that Cheers was based on, The Bull & Finch Pub, back in 1992.

It was a lot smaller than what you see on TV and a lot darker.

And this was back when the show was still in first run on NBC.

Way cool!

Did they happen to have a waitress who was rude, and another who was an elitist academic? Maybe a very dumb bartender?

Any further details you can provide are appreciated.

No, there were no Carlas or Dianes there...or at least not that I noticed. And no one yelled out "Norm!" or the equivalent thereof.

I just remember it being so much smaller in comparison to the TV counterpart.

If that had been the Bull & Finch Pub permanently closing because of the COVID pandemic, we would've just been in an uproar. That Fanueil Hall Marketplace location for the Cheers bar is probably going to be taken over by something else after the pandemic is over. There is constant worry about this happening with any business that's been killed by the Nightmare Virus.

The replica Cheers bar at Faneuil Hall didn’t really look much like the TV show either. It wasn’t in a basement - was on the main floor, with glass walls. The only thing that really looked the same was the center bar itself.

Even just seeing the central part of the bar itself would have been cool.

I visited Boston in 2008, I went into Faneuil Hall but only walked by the Cheers bar there. I actually went to the original bar on Beacon Street, had a burger and a couple of beers and bought some souvenirs. I would go again anytime, when visiting the USA after the pandemic becomes possible once more.
