I'll start with my least favorite character which was Alex. She was too cocky to be likable, she was actually kind of a smart-ass and not even in a funny or endearing way. When a character is TOO sure of themselves, there has to be a spoof on it to make it humorous and that was lacking here. I could picture Jamie Lee Curtis in this role, she was every bit as hot as Farrah Forke back in the day, but she never took herself too seriously, and that is what made her endearing (picture her falling off her high heels in True Lies. Brilliant!)
The more I watch the show, the more I like the character of Fay. It is a rare sitcom that features a woman her age as part of an ensemble cast that is not in a typecast role like a mother or grandmother. Fay is a character in her own right, with some of her own story lines that aren't stereotypical "little old lady" plots (although a few them are, but with a little edge to them to give them a twist.) Sometimes her character does border on syrupy sweet but then she brings it back with just the right amount of sass to carry it off. I go back and forth on the Casey character. Amy Yasbeck is breathtakingly beautiful, yet Casey is an emotional wreck from her divorce and doesn't even cash in on her desirability. She whines just the least little bit too much sometimes, but she is still more likable than the haughty Alex character. Helen, of course, is the female lead and if you don't like her character there is just no point watching the show at all. She has the perfect blend of vulnerability and spunk and looks like the quintessential Girl Next Door. She bombs out - in love, and in her career - just enough that viewers can relate to her without feeling sorry for her. (However, I didn't like the story line where she wrecked Joe's office, that was over the top and borderline psycho. It just wasn't funny at all.) Agree? Disagree? Thoughts? |
