Default Missy Gold

I'm watching this series again for the first time in a long time, and can't help but notice that Missy Gold's character started off receiving meaningful dialogue with her adult counterparts during the first two or three seasons, and she seemed to be a talented actress for her age.

However, as the series wore on she seemed to regress, appearing less and less and often limited to awkwardly delivered, corny one-liners in many later episodes. It seemed like she had lost interest in acting by the age of 10 and was being forced against her will to remain in the series.

i think the writers were finding it difficult to insert her character into the storylines (which seemed to get wackier as the series progressed) and just used her for the throwaway one-liners and didn't even try to give her any decent material to work with

although she did give up acting pretty soon after the show ended

Missy's regression seemed to coincide with Tracey's ascendance in the industry, with Missy quitting the biz not long after Tracey got her role on Growing Pains. Tracy ended up being more well-known, but Missy turned out much more successful overall, getting a PHD in psychology and avoiding the personal demons Tracey has had.

I think it was obvious to everyone that her role had been diminished to almost nothing. I say this because I recall in one episode her only line was something to the effect that it seems all she ever does anymore is to go off to school. It almost sounded tongue and cheek when I heard it, meaning she had so little to do in the show at that point.

I thought I remember reading in the newspaper entertainment section prior to season 4 or 5 that they were going to give Missy more story lines by having Katie become a reporter for the school paper and become somewhat of a Nancy Drew type character.
Does anyone else remember that?
Obviously it didn't happen.

Wow, that's cool. I never knew that! My brother has a PhD in Psychology as well.

I don't remember that but I'm sure it's possible.

I just think it was cute in the first couple of seasons, the whole "governor's daughter" thing, especially when she was little but as she got older I sometimes think they just didn't know what to do with her anymore, and it's not like they could just write her off the show so they gave her little one-liners here and there. I think the idea was that since she was getting older, we should maybe just assume that she was going out more and not always hanging around the mansion.
