TV "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Beats "Ozzie and Harriet's" Longest Comedy Record

"It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Renewed for Record-Breaking Season 15 at FX
by Nellie Andreeva
May 26, 2020

"It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has been renewed for a 15th season. The record-setting pickup was revealed as part of FX’s original programming slate through 2021, announced Tuesday morning.

With its 14 seasons to date, "It’s Always Sunny" had tied ABC’s "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" as the longest-running live-action comedy series. Now FX’s flagship half-hour series is solidifying its place in the TV history books as the sole holder of the record.

The news comes on the heels of creator, executive producer and star Rob McElhenney revealing last month that writing on Season 15 of the FX series had begun.

Wink Not So Fast There Herman

OK, I'll try this again, the lousy system here keeps bringing me to a website hocking undershirts everytime I start my brilliant thoughts. I don't even wear undershirts except for under my real shirt.

This is a show I have NEVER seen and was barely even aware of. But, allright the REAL catch to their proud claims of being around longer than Ozzie comes to when you ask how many episodes have you produced how much material have you created in your 14 years? Hmmm? In their 14 years they have produced 153 shows, wow, huh? OK, so how many shows, how much material did the Ozzie show create in their 14 years? Oh, only 435 episodes, that's all. Looks like that "Sunny" show has another 300 shows to go before they can start bragging about beating Ozzie's record. Guess this must be one of those "inconvenient facts" the libs love to talk about, only difference is this convenient fact is true.

During the last decade, I was hoping that The Big Bang Theory would surpass the longest-live-action comedy record held by The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, or at least be the first multi-camera sitcom to produce 300 episodes, but nope, Jim Parsons had to stop TBBT at 12 years and 279 episodes, thereby meaning it never got to reach either milestone, and I'll never forgive him for that. On the other hand, the next milestone for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be its 200th episode, and even that's going to take a while.

But regardless, when it comes to the longest-running comedies overall, animation will always be king no matter what.

Do you realize how much work Jim Parsons put into getting 279 episodes? He was obviously burnt out after that long also being the main character, which most actors wouldn't want to do as long as he did. He deserves to end on his own terms, even if it isn't quite the 300 episodes you wanted. You wouldn't have TBBT and its incredibly long run to watch period if Jim hadn't put in thousands of hours for you.

Passing Ozzie and Harriet in number of seasons is just an asterisk of a record for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia when it has really short seasons, none of them more than 15 episodes and several a lot less, and also took off between seasons several years. 153 episodes from the 14 seasons so far is a really tiny amount, especially compared to the 435 episodes from Ozzie and Harriet's continuous seasons Philadelphia will never come close to reaching. And other long-running sitcoms that went over 200 episodes in quicker time is also more impressive than the sporadic seasons of Philadelphia.

Right, lots of cable series, non-sitcom, have many more than 15 seasons. How it's Made is at 30+, but as stated, these are all short seasons.

If other The Big Bang Theory cast/crew members had wanted to reach those milestones, I'm sure they'd be mad at Jim Parsons, too.

I also thought TBBT was the right show to break the Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet record, but now there won't be ANY such shows shooting for that record ever (broadcast or cable).

And about that "Animation is king" comment: Al Jean stated in 2011 that he wanted to put The Simpsons at 30 seasons before the end of the 2010s decade, and guess what? He got his wish just as TBBT was ending! And then The Simpsons got renewed for two more seasons! A victory for animation, and a defeat for live-action.

Last Of The Summer Wine - 31 seasons, granted short seasons, and British so I guess it doesn't count, but still, pretty amazing for a sitcom.

I totally agree, that no one can take away from the prolific output generously provided us by Ozzie and his family. And all the wonderful twists and turns—The Thorny years, Rick as a wise-a## but nice! kid, his cracking into Rock & Roll, his & Dave’s fraternity years, the showcasing of their marriages, and Wally’s frequent crackpot antics.

BUT what the he## does your last sentence have to do with anything here????
