Ward's Baseball ending

First, I think this is one of the all time classic episodes. I love how Wally gives Ward a lesson on parenting and how Larry gets his comeuppance.

But what do you think about the last lines? June asks Ward what he's going to do with the empty pedestal on which the baseball formerly rested, and he replies that "I'll just put you up there." June says, "That's an awfully sweet thing to say," to which Ward replies, "It wasn't meant to be." (I'm paraphrasing all these lines because I don't remember the exact words.)

I always wondered why he said that. It wasn't a very nice thing to say to her. It's like in Beaver and Violet when Fred drops by in the morning (only time he is in the Cleaver kitchen) and as Ward leaves June asks if he's going to kiss her good bye. He says if he did it would be all over the office within an hour. She says "Now what did he mean by that?" Same thing I thought when he said that about the pedestal. Also that was just about the only time Ward was unsure about how to handle Beaver. He wants to give in and let him come down and eat dinner. I'm glad he listened to Wally and stuck to his guns as Beaver allowed Larry to play with Ward's property. Larry should have been punished in that one just like he should have been punished after using the drill. Instead Larry gets to eat Pop's dessert.

I know that baseball had all the New York Yankees autographs on them, and Beaver was told not to touch it, however I think Ward's punishment was way too strict. Well, I guess it could be equated with being in jail with being separated from family , friends, fun, and entertainment. Ward was mad when he came up with the punishment, but maybe if he said, "Go to your room!" And then wait until he's cooled down enough to think of a punishment for him.

That is one ridiculous line. If I were Hugh I would have asked about this line in the read-thru.

It ranks with that line of Beaver's, as he and Gilbert are on the way to the post office and he says, I hope they don't hit us. Huh?

Maybe putting June up on a pedestal wasn’t something she would want. Maybe the line backfired. I would have asked the writer what he meant by that.

Here’s an alternative. June: What are you going to do with the empty pedestal?
Ward: I think I’ll put that egg the boys soaked in vinegar. It’s rubbery like a ball and fits perfectly.
June: But won’t it smell?
Ward: Can’t smell any worse than you do now. Maybe not!

I like that! It totally sounds like a random conversation that would be on that show.

I would think Every women dreams about being pt up on a pedestal (?) kinda an old school term for being looked up to ? in a good light !

I wonder if this was/is a generational thing? I know for me, being put on a pedestal meant that there was only one way to go and that was down off of the pedestal.

I kicked more than one man to the curb because I did not want to be on the pedestal as it wasn't a truly respectable place to be. Its a fantasy place and not a real place. A man wasn't seeing me as who I truly am, but as he wants me to be.

Maybe that’s what Ward meant or the writers. It wasn’t meant to be a compliment as no one wants to be put up there. There’s another scene in the kitchen in the old house where Ward mentioned someone up on a pedestal. I think June asks how many women he looked up to.

now that I read other comments about the pedestal maybe I got it backwards in my mind ? and it's not a good thing to be on one -

To believe or behave as if someone or something is perfect, wonderful, or better than others, to the extent that one is unable to see its potential flaws or faults.

That dictionary definition puts Ward's comment in a new light.

Ward was making a sexual innuendo. June thought he meant he would admire her greatly (i.e., put on a pedestal), but he was telling her he would have sex with her (i.e., mount).
