Default When Disney Channel was good

I've been kind of reminiscing to the days of early-mid 2000's when my husband and I would watch Disney Channel pretty much 24/7. For a while there we couldn't get enough of it. He loved Selena Gomez so his favorite show was "Wizards of Waverly Place" and he also loved "Good Luck Charlie". That show was so hilarious that I think it would have done well on a major station, maybe not in prime time but like on Saturday mornings on ABC or something.

I remember when a show would end it's run, Disney would show the entire series beginning to end; the end being the premiere of the finale. I wish they would do that again because it ticks me off that hardly any of those shows aren't on DVD. They have DVD's but there are only like four episodes on it, which I don't understand.

Granted being that I'm old enough to be a grandmother to the target age for Disney Channel, I really shouldn't be complaining but I caught the station the other night and seriously, it's changed so much.

Some of the shows I liked were...

Dog With A Blog
Shake It Up
Wizards of Waverly Place
Good Luck Charlie
Lizzie McGuire (but that was before we started watching the station around the clock)

I also liked ANT Farm until they changed the format of it and Suite Life on Deck was okay. It was funny but some of the acting was awful.

Any Disney Channel shows that you loved and miss?

I would have to go back further than that when they actually had a Disney Channel magazine that you would get in the mail. They showed great old Disney movies all the time. I also watch Kids Incorporated and Teen Angel a lot. I miss the old Disney Channel.

I got hooked on the original Zack and Cody, back in the day. In fact I taped them all. To me that show was LOL, particularly the hotel heiress, a takeoff on Paris Hilton. Suite Life on Deck, not as good as the original.

Going back even further, in the 1980s they reedited some of the Ozzie and Harriet episodes and reran them, with new intros filmed by Harriet.

I only watch Disney Channel once in great while. I think the last show I watched regularly on there was Girl Meets World. I remember back in the 90's when Disney was a separate channel that you had to pay for and then it became part of the cable package. Some shows that I can recall watching on thier are The Torkelsons/ Almost Home, The Baby- Sitters Club, Growing Pains, Smart Guy. Some more recent ones include Girl Meets World, Good Luck Charlie, Life With Derek, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody & The Suite Life on Deck, Love Woody. My sister was a fan of Lizzie McGuire,Eve Stevens, Kim Possible, & Hannah Montana. And likes the theme song for Liv & Maddie & Cory in the House. There was also the block they used to do called Zoog Disney. The magazine was called Disney Adventures.

OMG, I LOVED that magazine! That's how I learned that Glynnis Johns who was in Mary Poppins is also in While You Were Sleeping. I have often wished they would bring that magazine back.

When Disney Channel was launched in 1983 it was a channel that had a very simple mission and that mission was to have quality sitcoms and dramas Disney movies and educational shows and cartoons that fit every member of the family. And so with the format very simple Disney Channel knew that this formula worked for a channel that attracted families. But once the 90's hit Disney Channel started to add interesting sitcoms and shows and specials to attract the big teenage audience and even started a nighttime hour for adults for when the children went to sleep. I remember when concerts were a big thing for Disney Channel in the 90's when they would show concerts from singers such as Paula Abdul Michael Bolton Elton John and many other singers and it proved to be a hit. But once that Disney Channel started changing their format and becoming a kids channel possibly to compete with Nickelodeon Disney Channel said farewell to families and started to focus on kids that really hurt them. But now with Disney+ being a hit I can see Disney Channel going broke in the near future

I miss when they used to show colorized reruns of ZORRO on weeknights and also reruns of the old WALT DISNEY TV show, with its various names: WALT DISNEY PRESENTS, DISNEYLAND, DISNEYS WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR, etc. also the old Disney movies.

From the 1980s to the 2000s, The Disney Channel had good programming with a unique schedule. It was variety filled for the most part of it.

I never really understood why they changed their format to appeal to teenagers. I mean I get that teens are a big audience, but Disney is primarily for children (or it started out that way) and that's why I loved the station at first. My brother is 10 1/2 years younger than I, so when the Disney Channel first came out I think I was in my teens. He was still a kid but I liked watching it with him b/c of the fact that it was fun to watch all of those kid shows.

I used to really be into Lizzie McGuire when I was younger, and even had some merchandise from the show too.

I also enjoyed The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody, Hannah Montana, and That’s So Raven.

Much of this conversation could apply to Nick at Nite, too. You could compare a 1985 N@N to now, and today's version would be totally unrecognizable. Today's version is simple to describe: Friends, Mom, and Lopez--that's it.
