Has anyone noticed how the 'Lost girls' changed towards the 'Core of 4' after season 1?
I was just having a rerun, and a few points came to my attention: for instance, 1. SUE ANN's relationship towards BLAIR becomes cold and distant: on the episode 'Front page' she just her eyes at her, and shakes her head annoyed during classes. 2. CINDY, who was normally the sweetest one acts really mean and nasty towards NATALIE: on the episode 'Sex symbol' she accuses her of being 'easy' with boys and snarls at her. 3. NANCY is the only one who remains intact with them (although on the episode 'Sex symbol' she is also nasty to NAT). What does anyone else think? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I thought it was in char for Sue Ann to shake her head at Blair picking fashion for some hard hitting story. The s1 Sue Ann probably would've made a quip but I guess they didnt have time for that.

Yeah, the Lost Girls do become antagonistic towards the Core Four... or at least Blair, Tootie, and Natalie, with whom they were very close during S1. It's not horrible, because they clearly still sit together and talk (like in "Gossip"), but their relationship definitely changes.
But the writers clearly wanted the Core Four to click, and that was, in their minds, only possible if there was a distancing between the Core Four and the Lost Girls. That's why, for example, we start seeing Molly hang around that snob, Margo, instead of hanging out with Blair, Tootie, and Natalie. And Sue Ann, for example, would have hung around Blair, waiting for Blair to finish her chores. But we never see that. Instead, the writers so isolate the Lost Girls from the Core Four that they force them away even in scenes where they could have provided much continuity. So we don't see the Lost Girls in "The Four Musketeers" or "Graduation", episodes where their presence was necessary. In "The Four Musketeers", the Core Four are finally released from their probation, so they properly should have gone back to the Lost Girls. That didn't happen, and instead, those girls aren't even mentioned. Natalie begins hanging out with Brenda, a girl we've never heard of before, and with the personality of a rock.

Margo was a "queen bee mean girl". I think younger Molly must have been so intimidated by her. Maybe they were paired up as roommates and Margo was bullying her.

I do believe they might have been roommates. Why else would Molly, social justice advocate, have ever hung out with a snob like that? We know Mrs. Garrett was in charge of the room assignments. I guess she hoped a little of Molly's social justice would rub off on Margo. It certainly was worth a try.

I do like picturing them as roommates---and after Blair gives her "that pie bit", she was a fool flat on her face and Molly never let her forget it.

Of course she could. That's why I said that theory was good too.

Interesting theory everyone thank you!
And you're right retro: the writers's purpose was too distanced the 'Lost girls' from the 'Core of 4', so BLAIR, JO, NAT and TOOTIE could click and bond like a family! The best example is on episode 'The 4 musketeers' (that episode reflects how tight the 4 girls have become as 'sisters', and MRS G as their 'surrogate mother'). And o course again on the episode 'Graduation': it was obvious it was centered between MRS G, and her two eldest girls. And yes, it was definitely MRS G's job to room together the girls she felt were suited for one another: JO as the 'Bronx street wise kid' was just the right challenge for 'snobby princess' BLAIR, as was 'mean bitch' MARGO for 'environmentalist' MOLLY! (The feisty red haired nutritionist is certainly a clever chick hee hee!) |

You’d be mad at the core four, too, if you got shunted off to a few stray cafeteria scenes in favor of them.
