NewsRadio marathon today on Antenna TV

NewsRadio is a mediocre show at best, not interested in this marathon. I did like the Murphy Brown marathon yesterday, saw 13 episodes of it. And another Wallace Shawn episode of Murphy Brown is on at midnight tonight after the NewsRadio marathon is finished.

First off you shouldn't be making light of the coronavirus by making comments like you just did about people being off their meds!

Yes this is Sitcomsonline, but we discuss a lot of things here besides Sitcoms ! Dramas ( Waltons falls into this category) , music, sports, politics etc. The Waltons was brought up on this thread because there was also a marathon of this show going on today along with the NewsRadio marathon !

The Waltons was a very good popular show! It ran for nine seasons! Somebody must have liked it, right? I'd say The Waltons will go down in history as being a classic way more than NewsRadio ever will!

I get it. We all have different opinions on what shows we like. However, NewsRadio seems to be taking a beating in this thread and I want to lift the show up some because it is my favorite show of all-time. I became a fan of it when I was in the 7th grade. I was 13-years-old when NewsRadio debuted on NBC in March of 1995. I watched the pilot episode with my sister in her room (since the parents got to control the living room TV). Right away, I knew I was watching something special. It was so funny and quirky. My sister had recorded the entire first season… all 7 episodes, haha. That summer, I watched those seven episodes over and over and over again. Unfortunately, I quit watching around season three. Not because I didn’t like it anymore but, for one, my sister stopped recording the episodes and also because I’m just like that. When shows are in their original run, I may take a break from them for a while but I always get back into them before they end. I got back into NewsRadio when season five aired on NBC, because that’s when my local affiliate (MVC) began airing the first four seasons in reruns during the day. This is when I became obsessed with the show. I recorded all the episodes and watched them over and over again. It became such a big part of my life, it was a part of my identity. I was a junior in high school and my favorite show was about a bunch of adults working in a radio station. I was sad when it ended, but it had a nice run – five seasons and 97 episodes. At least it had a finale plot for its last show, so it wasn’t just some random episode having to serve as its last one.

About six years ago, I was suffering from depression. I was even having suicidal thoughts. It was getting so bad, that I couldn’t watch TV anymore. And I LOVE TV. It’s my favorite thing in this world. All my favorite shows were just upsetting me. I was tired and couldn’t think straight, yet I wasn’t able to sleep at night. I’d just toss and turn. However, NewsRadio was the one show that I watched that comforted me. It was like an old friend was staying with me during this time to keep me company and keep me sane. The suicidal thoughts were still there but I knew I either had to go through with it or get help. I chose the latter. I began seeing a therapist and started getting better (though I’m still a pretty depressed guy, I’m not as gloom and doom as I was during that period).

NewsRadio is a show that doesn’t get a lot of attention. So when a TV channel picks it up, I’m thrilled. Even though I have it on DVD and I even bought the episodes to stream on Amazon Video, I’m always glad that it’s out there for other people to see (sadly, the episodes are edited, so they’re not getting to see complete episodes). No, I did not watch the Antenna TV marathon, but that’s because I was in the mood to watch Monk and then after finding out David Schramm of Wings died, I watched a few episodes of that series. NewsRadio is my all-time favorite show, but because I own all the episodes on DVD and streaming, I don’t have to watch a marathon when it’s on TV. I can watch it whenever I want. 😊

I get that it might not be a show you'd like, as it's an acquired taste, but considering three episodes in the second season were directed by Max Lembeck, I figured you'd have at least seen those episodes.

Good. I'm glad you like it. I remember trying to get you into the show before you had seen it. Glad it had a positive outcome.

I also agree about Coach, although I like that show, too, not nearly as much as NewsRadio. While NewsRadio is my number 1 favorite sitcom, Coach may or may not be in my top 100. I'm not sure where I'd place it.

I guess NewsRadio's big sin was being created and broadcast in the '90s instead of the '60s. Which is funny because the main character - Dave's favorite TV show in NewsRadio is Green Acres. A couple times, it even shows Dave watching that series. NewsRadio feels like a '90s version of Green Acres where there's the one sane guy, who's doing what he loves, but is surrounded by lovable weirdos and idiots.

Agreed! I've never been a Waltons fan, but I never thought there would come a time when it was competing with NewsRadio, haha. I'm not a huge drama fan. Life is dramatic enough. When I watch TV, I want to be comforted and watch funny shows. Yes, those shows can have "very special episodes" but I have to really care about the characters first. The best way to get me to care about a character is if they bring me the joy of laughter.

Obviously, I don't agree with this at all (in my viewing experience, Murphy Brown is one of the mediocre sitcoms - not horrible but not great). But I'm glad you at least gave NewsRadio a chance. For the longest time, you had never even seen it before. I'm just sorry you didn't become a fan.

I've never been a Western fan, but I actually found them quite entertaining so I may tune into that channel more now. I like the sets and costumes of the old west too.

While I would never chose to watch a Western over NewsRadio, I have become a fan of Westerns over the years. I love the early seasons of Gunsmoke. I also enjoy watching Have Gun, Will Travel as well as Laramie. "Westerns" is one of the topics I can discuss with my dad (who's 72) when I visit him, since he's a big fan of them.

A show with one sane guy among a bunch of loonies sounds a lot like Newhart, where you have two sane people (Dick snd Joanna).

I love Newhart. I think that in an interview with Dave Foley, when the show was new, he even said something like he plays the Bob Newhart role. So he acknowledged that early on.

I'm glad too. I need to get Seasons 3-5 while they're still at good prices since I have 1 & 2. Then I can just watch them anytime.
