TV Chris Rock To Star in "Fargo's" 4th Season

"Fargo" Season 4 is Happening with Chris Rock Starring – TCA
by Anthony D'Alessandro
August 3, 2018

"Fargo" creator Noah Hawley, as he promised, has found a date on his calendar and is moving forward with a fourth season of his Emmy-winning series toplined by Chris Rock who’ll play the head of a crime family.

FX Networks and Productions CEO John Landgraf announced the news today at TCA.

Series EP Warren Littlefield told Deadline back in June that they have a city and year for season 4, and as unveiled today that’s 1950, Kansas City, Missouri. Littlefield also told us that season 4 would go into production during fall 2019.

Essentially the locale will serve as the crossroads and collisions of two migrations, Italians coming from Italy and African Americans fleeing the south to escape Jim Crow, both fighting for a piece of the American dream as two controlling crime syndicates. They are at an uneasy peace controlling an alternate economy of exploitation, graft and drugs.

To cement their peace, the heads of both families have traded their eldest sons.

Rock’s character in order to prosper has surrendered his oldest boy to his enemy, and who must in turn raise his son’s enemy as his own. Then the head of the Kansas City mafia goes into the hospital for routine surgery and dies. And everything changes.

Rock said in a statement, “I’m a fan of Fargo and I can’t wait to work with Noah.

Season four sounds like it’s a cousin to season two which took place in 1979 and saw Jean Smart as Fargo criminal matriarch Floyd Gerhardt who squares off with a Kansas City crime syndicate, one which sends a violent and philosophical Mike Milligan (Bokeem Woodbine) to clean up affairs.

Mike in turn has an affair with Floyd’s rebellious granddaughter Simone (Rachel Keller).

How Fargo landed Chris Rock
Soon after Noah Hawley figured out his idea for Season 4, he "took it upon himself to seek out Chris and take him to lunch and talk to him about it,” says FX CEO John Landgraf. “After that lunch, everything came together really fast.” Landgraf adds: "That was like 10 day ago, then, boom, the deal was done. And that’s kind of the way it goes with Noah. He’s become so revered in a way, sort of like Ryan (Murphy), that people just really trust him that when he’s going to do something it’s going to be extraordinary." ALSO: Season 4 contains a plot very reminiscent of comic Mister Miracle.

Chris Rock reveals his Fargo character name: Loy Cannon

Rock will begin filming his role as head of a Kansas City crime syndicate in the 1950s. Speaking in a pre-taped video at FX's upfronts, Rock said his kids thought he was "cool" when they found out via Google that was going to be on Fargo. “It’s organically funny,” Rock said of the show. “Even if I wasn’t in it, (I would have) the exact same level of excitement.”

Chris Rock calls Fargo "the best part I've ever done"

Rock tells EW his crime lord character Loy Cannon is "Tony Soprano-esque." "This is the best part I’ve ever done and, honestly, probably the best part I’ll ever have," he adds. "That’s how it works. Morgan Freeman is in The Shawshank Redemption. He’s amazing. He’s made a kazillion dollars since then. He never got a part that good again. When you get these great parts you have to make the most of them. Naive people will tell you, ‘There’s always tomorrow and you’ll always get another chance.' The smart people will tell you, ‘You probably get three chances at anything in life, and you’ll probably be busy for the first two chances. When you get that third one you better be f*cking ready.”"
