So basically I found out from IMDB that Columbia House owned the rights to the Show, they tried to do same thing they with What's Happening.
Only problem was there was no....Clifton Davis and it was a MOVIE not a TV show_LOL Clifton Davi wasn't because he had signed to do Amen |

Was this movie released either TV only or home video? I always thought this was a pilot for a reboot given the success of What's Happening Now and Small Wonder in terms of first run syndication. Mama's Family was rebooted and it was a smash hit, lasting several years.
I have loved to see a complete retooling of this show for the 1980's if they corrected mistakes from the 1970's. |

This is what I found on IMBd http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071065/
"In 1987, a pilot for a syndicated revival series called That's My Mama Now! (1986) starring Ted Lange was produced but it was not picked up." |

Good thing Clifton took Amen over this. Given his 'born again' status, he was not really trying to go back into acting and wanted to stay out of the industry to focus on getting his life together. With an offer to play a minister, it fitted where he wanted to be and he also made sure Amen didn't venture too far into toilet humor as he said in Jet.
One line I remember from that was 'Yes, its a comedy and there are things that Sherman does for comic relief so we have a good clean time with this show.' |

Having the actor that played Junior in the original play Clifton in the reboot sounds like a silly idea to me. I'm kind of glad that this didn't get picked up.

I don’t think Ted Lange was playing Clifton. According to imdb, he was still going to play Junior. My guess is that they were going to rewrite it so that Junior was now Mama’s son. I noticed that they were going to have a third actress (Daphne Maxwell Reid) as the daughter.
