Blair & Jo ordering drinks with Mrs. Garrett

On today's Antenna TV episode they went to a strip club for Mrs. Garretts birthday and all of them ordered drinks. My first thought was no way are Blair & Jo over 21, but then I figured this was back when it was still 18 to drink? It's just weird seeing them ordering drinks like that when they're still so young!

The whole episode was kind of weird. It's funny how they act like it was so scandalous when Blair's boyfriend was a stripper to pay for his med school. Especially Jo's reaction to it. My God she acted like it was the worst thing a guy could do and she practically demanded Blair not see him anymore. Way over the top and strange lol.

Today, I doubt it would be such a big deal to any of them. Mrs. Garrett was the only one who didn't see the big fuss....and I loved her reaction when Jo asked how she'd feel if her boyfriend was a stripper.

Oh, did the drinking age used to be 18? If you and Retro remember that, sounds like you two are maybe the same age? (all in good fun )

Really? I think of Blair as being so "extremely right wing" about this. She took Sue Ann's midwestern conservatism to the max here. I don't remember anything about Jo being offended/bothered in the least. Interesting.

I think it was somewhere in the mid 80's that the drinking age upped from 18 to 21 so this episode must have been filmed right before the change. And yes, i'm up there in age lol. In a few weeks I say goodbye forever to my 40's and hello to my 50's...hence the 1970 in my screenname.

Jo went a little overboard about the whole thing and practically SCREAMING at Blair of how wrong it is for him to be a stripper and what a "creep" he was. Even Mrs. G was telling Jo to calm the heck down.
She seemed a little too bothered by the whole thing, especially since it was Blair's boyfriend and had nothing to do with her which is even what Mrs. G said to her. Her reaction was just over the top and weird...especially since she was snapping pics of the strippers when she was there at the club.

I don't think it was strange for Jo to act that way. She's always gets angry when someone tries hurting one of her friends. She tries being the protector of others. From what I gathered of the episode, Jo was under the impression Cliff was being deceitful to Blair in a cruel way and possibly two timing Blair. It probably reminded her of Chad and how that guy was towards Blair.

Wow, that really is weird! I mean I binged the series (except for disliked episodes I skip) a year or two ago, and I remember nothing of this about Jo. All I remember is Blair seemingly doing a 180 and it being SO weird.

MRS G is simply the best! When JO asks her, what would she do if her boyfriend was a stripper, she just says: "let me think..."

I am in that age range. When I was 18, I could drink legally for 2 months before it was 19. Then I was 19 and could drink legally for two months before it was raised to 21. Since I grew up in NY state, the same laws would apply.

Different states had different laws. I got trashed on my senior high school trip in Virginia and it was completely legal to do so. Ordered pictures of a beer while carousing the bars unsupervised by teachers. This was high school, not college.

Huh? Jo was the one who got the other girls in trouble. She was the one who hot wired the school van and stole it. She was the one who shoplifted and got Mrs. Garrett in trouble.

Funny that Blair was upset that her boyfriend was a stripper since she was so for "experimentation" in the first season. And she was perfectly willing to sneak off with Nancy O's boyfriend in Season 2 without telling Nancy O.

I get that it's Jo's personality to be the protector and voices her opinions when she sees wrongdoings, but her whole reaction to Cliff's work was way over the top. She was even standing right there when he explained to Blair that it was just a job 1 day a week to pay for med school and he has nothing to do with the fawning customers.
And he explained rationally that 1 night of work makes as much as 40 hours a week working where he could spend that extra time on school. All of it sounded perfectly logical and nothing deceitful but after he left, Jo still continues to call him a "creep" and shouts at Blair to stop seeing him. I just didn't like how she acted in that whole scene and I found it bizarre.
Also, it does seem out of character for either of them to bring Mrs. G to a male strip club for her birthday in the first place. It just doesn't seem like something either Jo or Blair would think of doing for her. (Maybe Natalie and Tootie lol) The whole episode is pretty convoluted to make the stripper story work.

Natalie would definitely take Mrs. G. to a male stripper show, but she was too young at the time the episode aired.

Yeah, you'd expect Jo, who is street-smart, and who comes from a low-income neighborhood, and where no one in her family was able to go to college, and her mom has burned herself out on 2 jobs for years, to understand.

Yes, I agree. I think Nancy and Molly would have taken her in a heartbeat! Boy-crazy Nancy would think it's "a gas" (to use an "oldies phrase", haha) to get Mrs. Garrett out to a male strip club, and Molly would totally be all about taking Mrs. Garrett there where they can watch men take off their clothes for all the women in the house and for the men to be the ones exploited for once! lol

Yep, and I could see the episode working much better had Natalie and Tootie taken her. They should've shelved that script for a couple of more seasons and dusted it off when they got older.
Then again, I don't think Natalie would've had a problem with it at all. Maybe Tootie would if it was her boyfriend...but even then, Natalie would've had the opposite reaction as Jo and tell her to keep dating him.....or else she will.

Yes, they could've brought them back for that episode to be the ones to have the idea to bring Mrs. G there and then Blair sees the boyfriend there. It would've been more logical.
Not that Blair & Jo are sticks in the mud...it just doesn't seem like something either would ever conceive as a gift for Mrs. G.

(Thanks for the Bday wish....it's a bit unnerving to realize that i'm now closer to Mrs. G's age than the girls. )

Listen here, sonny. Back in my day, the drinking age was six, and the smoking age was negative four. We played our victrolas by candlelight, because we were saving our gasoline for the invention of the automobile. We only watched The Facts of Life when the Paramount Broadcasting Zephyr flew over the neighborhood, and we liked it that way! Now get off my lawn! *shakes cane weakly*
