Rush drummer and primary lyricist Neil Peart has died at age 67. As CBC News reports, Peart's publicist confirmed the drummer passed away in California on January 7 after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Peart's cause of death was confirmed by family spokesperson Elliot Mintz. In 2015, Peart officially retired from music due to a struggle with chronic tendonitis as well as in the hope of spending more time with his family. More to come. |

According to this Rolling Stones article, he had been quietly battling brain cancer for three and a half years.
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/m...ituary-936221/ In January 2018, bandmate Alex Lifeson confirmed that Rush was retiring due to Peart's health issues. |

Unfortunately, I see no evidence that any American TV News agencies covering his death. CBC is covering it though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9bxCBQqGVc |

Some new information:
Peart died from glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, and had been suffering from chronic tendinitis and shoulder problems. The illness had been a closely-guarded secret in Peart's inner circle until his death. |

Interestingly, back in the 70's, when Rush were working with producer Terry Brown, each of the band members had fun nicknames that were plays on their names. Alex Lifeson was named "Lerxt" and Neil Peart was nicknamed "Pratt".
I forgot what Geddy's name was. I had seen Rush so many times in concert, from 1977 to 2010. They always put on a great show, and the highlight of the concert was when Neil Peart did his amazing drum solo. He will be certainly missed. His lyrics were also absolutely thought-provoking. |

It was not surprising that Peart and his family kept his condition a secret to the very end. In 2014 when the band announced their retirement, Peart simply said he no longer wished to tour in order to spend time with his family. In over the past year or so he said that he was suffering from shoulder tendonitis. He had always been up for the show and to play drums as best as he could, but then he found himself unable to do so. It was part of his intensely private nature that he did not disclose the real nature of his true illness.
In songs like "Limelight" he spoke of his need for isolation from others. |

Evidently the latter of the two are a common ailment among drummers. And with a man who worked as hard on drum sets as Peart, that's very easy to believe. I think if Keith Moon didn't OD, he might've suffered the same problems later in life.

Currently listening to the Neil Peart special on KNAC.com right now. Wow, so much material by Rush I haven't even heard before, so much live stuff!!
Wow, they are playing "Xanadu" live, the one live song guaranteed to send chills up and down your spine!! |

I was reading on Blabbermouth.net that Godsmack drummer Steve Erna, who was a total fan of Peart and Rush, said that Neil Peart was confined to a wheelchair and thoroughly incapacitated toward the end.
Now everyone on that site is angry that he disclosed this sad condition about Peart. I'm still thinking it needed to be understood about Peart and what he was going through. People were going to have questions and concerns about him and their response to terminal illness. |

Very sad to hear of his passing. We saw Rush in concert in 1980 and they put on a great show.
