Default Mystery Hum

Anybody watched this story?
It is about a collection of people from all over the world hearing this eerie humming noise continuously from a certain point of their life.
It is uncertain what this noise is or what is causing it.

It's on youtube.

Yeah, I've watched it. There are a lot of UM segments on youtube. Is there something else you have to say about it?

Well it's hard to decipher what this noise could be from. I mean it sounds really weird. I've had humming noises in my ears before and never thought it could be something like these people described. Why couldn't it be a simple humming in the ears that a small percentage of the population get?

In answer to your question, because it's not a simple humming, it's an all pervasive drone that inhibits their quality of life, capacity to concentrate or sleep, work, etc.

A small portion of people have an ultra sensitivity to sonic vibration, a little like dogs have a hightened sensitivity to some noise, and it's almost certainly being caused by some human-created phenomenon, like a telecommunications device or military communications system.

Note that police sometimes use very low frequency sounds to subdue large crowds. There's a French film, directed by Gaspar Noe, which I haven't seen, but which features a scene in which Monica Belluci is assaulted, accompanied by the use of such a sound, and it was reported that some audience members experienced nausea as a result of the 'humming'.

There's no question the phenomenon is real, and is widely recognised. It's just a question of exactly what's causing it.

Thats interesting.......

I just started hearing some low volume hum 4 days ago and its driving me insane!!! (Makes me feel dizzy, etc) -- If I cover my ears I cant hear it so I know its really there....... Up until this I have only read of others hearing it.....

I CANT SLEEP,ETC........ Its a quiet low pitch sound that goes up and down in loudness slightly.. Like some engine running somewhere.... My mom and dad cannot hear it.....

2 nights ago it stopped around 2am but ever since its been constant and still going!

I put a fan on in the room where I sleep and I cant here it and am able to sleep..... (I got about 6hrs yesterday)

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT CAUSES THIS???? -- I DO THINK THE GOVT CAN CAUSE IT AND IT LITERALLY MAKES ME ILL!!!!! (I have to cover my ear to stop feeling queezy at times)

ULTRA LOW FREQUENCY MIND CONTROL OPERATIONS!

EDIT:

I went out yesterday and when I came home the intensity of it seemed to be less, harder to hear but its still there.... I did not hear it when I was out...... @ my friend Ronnys or @ my friends video store..... (In the bathroom where quiet @ both places)

I dunno..... Its definetly something either in this house or something.... I havent asked the neighbours yet if they have heard it....

Hopefully this won't offend anyone but my curiosity is piqued. Is Sarah from the segment on UM a transsexual? She looks VERY manly and has huge hands and sounds like a guy. Just curious if anyone else felt the same or noticed this as well.

Saw this one again yesterday. I really can't describe how much this segment actually scared me as a kid, as hilarious as that might sound.

I did some leisurely digging and both U.S. ELF transmitting stations (there were only two, one of which was the station 80 miles away from interviewee Hal Runniano's town, which I presume was Houghton based on his mentioning the vent system on top of Michigan Tech) began testing in 1981. Apparently, it took over 20 years to even get the project off the ground because of widespread protest from environmentalists that feared the system might disrupt wildlife patterns, and public citizens that feared perceived potential health effects. So based on my reading, as early as 1968, it seems there was some degree of negative public perception of low-frequency transmission.

When the ELF system went operational in 1989, it transmitted a continuous 'idle' signal until a message needed to be transmitted to a sub. However, the only message that could be sent on this system was a request for the crew to bring the sub to the surface in order to stand by for a more detailed message transmitted by conventional means. In essence, while ELF could penetrate great depths of water, it wasn't an efficient method by which to transfer things like orders and the like and functioned primarily as a "bell-ringer". I'm unsure of the nature of the transmissions prior to this time, but one might surmise that reports of the hum should have begun at least as early as 1981 at the time of initial testing if it was indeed related to the communication system. I know UM segments aren't always 100% accurate, but I find it curious that it was pretty set on "the late 1980s", and more specifically 1989, as the point at which the reports began to come in. Undoubtedly this was an attempt to demonstrate a link between the phenomenon and the initiation of the ELF system into operational service.

To make a long story short, I do not think hum hearers are ultimately perceiving the same thing--I think several are tinnitus sufferers or experiencing some other disease or disorder of the ear, another percentage is hearing something from an industrial source, and yet another slim percentage is probably not being entirely accurate or truthful about what they're experiencing. However, I hypothesize that the vast majority were, at the time, highly aware of the controversy surrounding ELF transmitters, and unfortunately I think many of them might have just made the pieces fit without really exploring a few hard questions.

As the Navy shut down the transmitting stations in 2004 as they converted from ELF to VLF comms, I'd be interested in how many hearers who were certain of ELF's implication in their symptoms still A) hear the hum, and if so, B) how they explain their condition now.

Maybe that's all pretty presumptive of me, but I think this is a pretty good example of simultaneously oversimplifying and overcomplicating a handful of pretty garden-variety problems.

I'm fond of this segment, part of it was filmed in my old college town, Houghton MI, and the guy suffering from the hum worked for the university.

Of course this was filmed 20 years before I got there, but still.

I've also just recently watched this one and thought the same exact thing. These people were all experiencing different things, and the Parks Service employee seemed the least believable, IMO.

I think this is probably a very good explanation of what went on with this case. I have had tinnitus for many years. Mine is a very high-pitched noise that is always present, but I don't notice it if there is other noise going on. When I sit in a quiet room, it starts to really bug me so having white noise at a minimum is always helpful. I don't know if there is such a thing as "low-pitch tinnitus" but I wouldn't doubt it.

I think you are spot on that some may have really heard something, but it was probably a combo platter of that, tinnitus, those who wanted to join the bandwagon (fakers), and psychosomatic people ("Do you hear that? You don't hear that? Can't you HEAR that HUM?!?").

There totally is. In fact, the pitch described by people with low-frequency tinnitus is "like the bottom two notes of a piano held down at the same time", which is fairly similar to the recreated sound featured in the segment.

I really do believe these people suffer from some form of tinnitus, either with an otogenic or psychosomatic cause. It must be terrible, but I don't believe there's an outside source.

Yeah, it’s tinnitus. I have it myself and when he went into the underground mine and it got louder, there it is. He has no outside noises to interfere with it and make it seem quieter. *♂️

For the list of the "extraordinary" things that have happened to people on UM that in reality have an incredibly mundane explanation, this one may top the list.

I have tinnitus also, so I guess I finally have something for the "things that happened on UM that are relatable to your own life" thread.
