Last night they showed that one where they find a marijuana plant growing by the door and that was also one of the episodes where Grady's watching the house and Fred is already back.

You are right. The marijuana episode is in 4th season which Fred was already back. Maybe Fred was sick that week.

I always thought that one reason Fred came back after abruptly leaving in middle of season three was that Grady did such a good job filling for him. He probably thought that if he don't com back, S&S will continue with Grady as his replacement.

Also note that Lamont is livelier in those episodes with Grady as care taker.
