Default Segments That Surprised You?

Are there any specific segments that didn't go the way you expected? I'm not referring to the later updates but what actually happened in the episode as it was aired.

One that stands out to me was the Bruce Kelly case where he claimed to be have a past life on a WWII submarine. He travelled to Alabama and I expected him to be immediately dismissed by his alleged 'past life family' (especially because if you pardon my bluntness they looked like stereotypical uneducated, religious, rural southerners) but I was impressed at how open minded they were and asked intelligent questions. They didn't seem totally convinced but they were more than willing to explore the possibility. I did not see that coming as usually UM tends to 'pick sides' to add drama.

Another that stands out was the Eric Tamiyasu segment. I was not surprised to see the Sheriff interviewed but to actually hear him admit on camera he was the one who wanted to burn the bed was quite unexpected. Strange to see police be so honest about doing something that's not exactly in the manual.

Hearing that Phillip Fraser had two firearms seized at the border. Just gave me a huge "damn..." moment

I forgot about that one. For someone who was obviously intelligent (a medical student?), I thought he would have been smart about never bringing a gun or other weapon into Canada unless you know the (very strict) rules. Not only is it highly illegal at the border but if I ever saw a regular civilian with a gun visible in any way like most Canadians I would call 911 immediately. He should have considered himself extremely lucky to have only had them seized and nothing more.

Canada and the USA are very similar in a lot of ways but I was blown away (no pun intended) that regular people carry actual guns in public when I visited the States. I certainly know legal gun owners in my province but it's something that's almost never publicly discussed in this country.

True, but you have to admit that his instincts were right.

Close to home for me, too--only I reckon I fall more along the lines of 'toothless hillbilly' being from East TN.

I wasn't surprised as much as I was impressed Joe Jones just flat-out admitted taking the $20 from the suspect in the Su-ya Kim case to illegally dump.

The Skunk Ape segment on the Farina reboot surprised me when it included an update with a creepy (but probably fake) photo of the purported ape.

I'm still shocked that UM agreed to do a segment on the death of Tony Lombardi. I feel terrible for his parents, but they offered nothing to substantiate their contention that their son was murdered.

With nearly every other murder vs. suicide segment, there's at least one discrepancy brought to light by the family where we as the viewers can listen and say "Okay, the family is right to question that". Apart from some injuries that likely came from the fiance who threatened Tony to stay the hell away from his girlfriend and the pencil in the headboard thing (Cheryl Lombardi is not a forensic expert), none of these things are present.

Again, I feel the utmost sympathy for the Lombardi family, but to quote the prosecutor in the Larry Race case, this is not an appropriate case for UM because it is simply not an unsolved mystery.

Indeed. I don't want to downplay the awfulness of what happened to Su-ya. It's horrible what happened to her but Joe Jones quote and his delivery kind of cracks me up every time...

"He like...hesitated, you know, a couple seconds. And then he said, um, what if I give you $20.00? So I said, yeah, O.K."

Then when the man gives Jones the $20.00, he notices blood all over his shirt...yet still isn't the slightest bit suspicious. Many times we saw instances on UM where someone's gut instinct was correct but in this example, poor Joe wasn't even close.

Dennis Farina Season 6 Episode 20

Coincidentally it's also the only way to view the Diana Robertson/Mike Riemer segment which is featured in that episode.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was preparing to laugh, but those photos are much creepier than I was expecting. Had no idea the Robertson/Riemer case was featured on the Farina UM.
