Why is The Chain the worst 70s song of all time?

Rumours is a vastly overrated and overhyped album that's heavily boosted by the four hit singles and that's it. Aside from the four hits, the album is routine and mundane. In 1977 after the album came out, I opted to buy the 45 RPM singles at the local record store and left the LP sitting in the album bin.

In reference to albums solid from start to finish, here's a good sampler, energetic, melodic hard rock from 1978, this LP blows Rumours away every day of the week.

I love "Second Hand News." It's one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. I like just about every song that Lindsay Buckingham sings.

It does seem like the OP just dislikes Fleetwood Mac in general. He/she doesn't even compare The Chain to a Fleetwood Mac song that he/she likes..... just a bunch of negativity.

Or do you just think anything that wasn't a single isn't worth your time (even though The Chain, Second Hand News and Gold Dust Woman got the airplay that people would assume they were singles)? Pretty much every song off Rumours gets played on classic rock/oldies stations and has strong Spotify numbers. Much like Thriller or Dark Side Of The Moon. A lot of albums have filler, Rumours is the kind that in general is well liked from start to finish that there have been tribute albums dedicated solely to the album itself. You literally cannot put Rumours in the same category as Fleetwood Mac's "Behind The Mask", which had two okay-ish singles (and not even as good as the "filler" Rumours songs),one or two album cuts that were tolerable and a bunch of forgettable stuff. THAT album went to the cutout bins and isn't regarded as a classic. Saying Rumours is a filler-laden forgettable Fleetwood Mac album is like saying Purple Rain is a forgettable Prince album or The Joshua Tree is a forgettable U2 album.

You have your opinion and I have mine. Other albums you mentioned, Thriller, Dark Side Of The Moon, Purple Rain, Joshua Tree, all of these are overrated and overhyped by the media. Thriller has some good songs on it. "Money" is the only good track on Dark Side Of The Moon, the rest of the album is dull in comparison, dull noise to fall asleep to.

I love every single second of the "Dark Side of the Moon" album, but that's just me. Also, I don't think "Thriller" or "Purple Rain" are overrated in any way. I don't care about "Joshua Tree" but then again, that's just me.

Everyone has their opinion and tastes in regards to music. As far as albums go, I tend to prefer albums from lesser known bands/artists that didn't hit the big time. Some of my favorite rock bands from the 70's are City Boy, Lake, Starz, No Dice, Hero, Teaze, and Trigger to name a few. All these bands recorded some awesome albums.

"Stairway To Heaven" is seriously overhyped! My favorite Led Zeppelin song is either "The Rain Song" or "In the Light."

I heard "Rock And Roll" the other day on the radio, that song is OK too but overall I'm not into Zeppelin much.

Eric Clapton is alright although I'm not a big fan, but he's a good musician, Layla, I Shot The Sheriff, Lay Down Sally are all good songs.

I've never heard this before, but I did listen to it and I actually prefer "The Chain" to this. Sorry, just my opinion.

Those are some of the best albums ever IMO, but then I also am past my time of looking down at something because it was popular. Purple Rain's been my favorite album since I was five.

I think the real issue is the definition of "filler", which on another forum I read actually had this debate a week or two ago when discussing the discography of David Bowie. A difference between "I don't care for this song" and actual filler. The discussion was about how Let's Dance was the first time Bowie actually put filler on an album, there may have been weaker spots on previous albums but usually every single note on those albums was there for a purpose, but stuff like "Shake It" and "Without You" were actually just thrown there to pad an album out with not a lot of ideas, that his previous more theatrical albums had weaker spots but they still had a reason to be on the album compared to some of the tracks padding down his 80s albums that were forgettable and pointless. When it comes to "Rumours" for instance, songs like "The Chain", "Gold Dust Woman", "Second Hand News", "Never Going Back Again" and "Songbird" have all become classics and favorites in their own right, frequently appearing in live sets (Songbird was usually meant to be the showcase for Christine McVie) and also turning up on compilations and receiving airplay in their own right. You may not like those songs, but I don't see the argument that The Chain (used as the opening track on their last tour and also used heavily in Guardians Of The Galaxy) or Gold Dust Woman (considered one of Stevie Nicks' ultimate tracks) are merely "filler" when they've become classics in their own right and songs the audience expects to hear in concert. Filler tracks usually aren't performed live or placed on compilations.
