In the final episode of S&S in season 6 called "School daze", I am not sure if Lamont or Fred knew that would be their last episode together.

In the last scene before the credit roll, Lamont and Fred were sitting in the living room and Lamont was telling Fred how proud he is for Fred getting his high school diploma.

Then Lamont said "I love you pop", and Fred said "I love you son". And the scene closes as they chad on.

I guess that would be good enough last scene considering that there was no official "final" episode for Sanford and Son. And not a bad way to end the six years run all by saying they love each other.

No it was never a true ending because the Sanford Reality was revisited in 1980 explaining

Fred still lived there with a new partner
Lamont was in Alaska
Rollo was still around
Esther was still around

If we consider Sanford as somewhat continuation of Sanford&Son, then how one would characterize Sanford's Arms that precede it. In the Sanford's Arms, Lamont and Fred sold the junk business and have moved to Arizona.

When "Sanford" started, the events of "Sanford Arms" were completely ignored as if that show never existed.

And speaking of "Sanford", this thread prompted me to watch the premiere episode again. Still some decent lines from Fred, especially in this exchange:

Eve: It isn't easy when you're alone, is it Fred?
Fred: No. Alone is alright in the toilet, but that's it.

it was too short-lived to have a reality. Sanford lasted almost two years while sanford arms lasted 2 mins

I actually like Sanford better than the last 2 years of Sanford and son

Sanford and Son didn't have much luck with spin off. Grady was also a spin off and like Sanford's Arm, as you said it only lasted few minutes

If Lamont had decided to stay after Redd Foxx departed, I think the show may had a chance. Albeit as continuation of Sanford and Son or as in spin off.

I was thinking that maybe one reason those spin off's failed so bad might be that they were family oriented shows with classic husband/wife/kids setup.

And Sanford and Son being more of an adult theme show, the "built in" S&S audience expected the same theme with spin off shows also. But abandoned those two shows when it was not.

Well it's beyond me why either NBC or the producers would have wanted to continue the show without the main characters.

As for Grady it might have been a victim of its time slot.

The TV party website said they scheduled in Thursday Nights during the 8 PM hour which was opposite of CBS's The Walton's and ABC's Barney Miller.

It should have just aired after Sanford and Son since they was both set in the same city. And then they could have done crossovers like how ABC did with Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley since they were both set in Milwaukee
